top styler question PLEASE HELP!

OK..the first time I used it, I felt like a pro! It worked beautifully and my hair looked wonderful!! Now I have used it at least five more times and OMG...my hair looks fried and fuzzy....It is probably because I am just using the topsyler on my dry hair and not putting a product in first. Please tell me what you put on your hair before you apply the shells...please/otherwise back this baby goes. beanie
