Just went to dentist yesterday. I had no problems, no cavities. but i told her i was shocked i didnt. The last couple of yrs that i went i had at least 4 cavities, even though they say i have perfect teeth.. the dentist recommended xylitol toothpaste, and they have a gum and mouthwash, she said to look on amazon for it.. i did research and its very expensive and can have side effects. 1 tube a 5 oz, is 7.62!! they say people can experience bloating, gas etc. if you ingest it.. so i think the toothhpaste would be safer or the mouthwash versus the gum... she said its real good and to give it a try... has anyone used it and have any experiences with it.. i really dont want to spend that kind of money..

Hmmm......if she's so hot for this product - she should get small samples from Xylitol - like the packet they give out after a cleaning.

Personally, I'd stick with the brand I've been using.  Sounds funny to me.

Tell your DDS it's too expensive & make a recommendation that is more in line with your budget. Drug store toothpastes are all recommended by the ADA.

$8.00 every couple of months or so is too much to spend on your oral health?  SMH

Although I don't think the price is outrageous--I use Sensodyne which is similar in price--I agree with a previous poster that the dentist should give you a free sample.  My dentist always gives me a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss after a cleaning.  Or at the very least a coupon for the product.

BTW, if you had such a great checkup why concern yourself with this product???

no way more than that... if you brush your teeth 2 or 3 times a day, a little tube of toothpaste wont last a couple of months.. plus mothwash thats not cheap.. believe me i spend enough money on my teeth.. with whitening, electric toothbutshes etc. i have no problem trying it... but im asking is it worth it.

I'm not a dental professional.

But I just came across a book called "kiss your dentist goodbye"

Although the author does not recommend stopping dental visits, she does offer preventative care suggestions.

She does mention xylitol to be used in the form of gum, tablets, others. Perhaps disolving the little mints would give the benefits without the cost of the toothpaste.

I've had Xylitol mints and was fine with them. (a natural brand). Of all the faux sweeteners, this is supposed to be the least harmful to us. I think it was Mannitol that gave me gas and bloating. It was in maple syrup. Never again!

As for the toothpaste, if it doesn't have fluoride in it I'd like to try it. Will check it out.

@bonnie f   I use a prescription fluoride toothpaste that I get from my dentist.  It's about $18., for a 6 month supply.  It has cut my cavaties to practically none.

Isn't Xylitol the artificial sweetner used in sugarless gum?  The one that's deadly to dogs?

Try Himalaya Botanique.  It has xylitol and tastes terrific and comes in several flavors.  I have been able to get it at Sprouts or Kroger as a bogo.  Funny thing, the first night I brushed with it and got up in the wee morning hours for something, I thought 'what smells so good'--couldn't believe it was MY breath!  LOL!
