Shopping/Spending money really has become quite a fascinating (and problematic) phenomena. We all do things for a reason and it really can be difficult to stop/decrease doing something without replacing it with something else.....something "better" and more gratifying. A very difficult issue.........

You are so right about occupying yourself with something else. Something more meaningful. Also, it helps tremendously to be determined to clean out and organize. That will stop you cold in your tracks from doing anymore of that mindless spending. I have discovered a gold mine in my closet! I absolutely don't need to buy any of that cheap clothing at rip-off prices right now. What's in my closet is superior quality in comparison. I'm also stocked up enough on makeup, I won't be purchasing for the next year.

Two moves in 4 years is what made me stop. Moving and re-organizing and getting rid of stuff tired me out. My Son grew up so the need/impulse to feel as though I had to decorate every Holiday left. If I purchase a clothing item that is not used within 2 weeks - back it goes. BEFORE I buy jewelry I 'shop' my 3 jewelry boxes. I will admit that I developed an appreciation for good jewelry from QVC and also I learned a lot about other brands of skincare outside of what was offered at Department stores.

Suzy had an excellent point - spending a lot of time on the forums doesn't help if you are already predisposed to over buying. They have the tendency to make us aware of the latest and greatest (or so we think) and before you know it, you are off to buy it even if you have no need for it whatsoever. I have been guilty of this myself on occasion then end up regretting it. I am good about returning those mistakes though. Just makes me annoyed if I have to pay to ship it back to wherever.

ITA wholeheartedly! After my last two moves, I refused to buy anything for over a year each time. I have also realized that I really don't need a ton of clothing anymore. I will invest in good quality pieces but don't need a closest full of them anymore. That has helped a lot.

It's that blasted dopamine! Dopamine is produced in the brain -- the part that's associated with reward. It's very similar to addiction and we crave that to which we are addicted. We feed a habit that makes us feel good for a limited amount of time.

We need to cultivate a new habit that is just as stimulating -- and less expensive!

Haha! That dang dopamine!

I just received a Judith Ripka ring (my first) -- a HONKING 12 ct emerald cut DMQ. I love it, am wearing it, love looking at it, and was just thinking there sure is a difference between things that really DO make me happy, and things that make me THINK I'll be happier, but actually fill me with regret when they arrive.

I've been swept up in ordering, convincing myself I really want/need what's being presented, then come to my senses and cancel if I can. I am so RELIEVED. I think that's the test. The gut test. Are you kind of filled with regret for ordering, or confident you've made a wise choice?

Unfortunately, I'm not always clear headed.{#emotions_dlg.biggrin}
