Does anyone have dental veneers?
My mother called today to tell me she has cracked another veneer. How long do veneers usually last?
Her first veneer cracked in about 16 months, they said it was a flaw in the fabrication. 2 years later it broke in half length wise!!?!? I am thinking she many need another dentist that uses another veneer lab.
Is veneer cracking and breaking common?
My mother is very careful of her teeth and dental work so that is really not a factor.

Veneers can last twenty years, but that's no guarantee. What does her dentist say about them cracking? If she has good oral hygiene & habits and gets her teeth checked regularly, there definitely could be a problem with the veneers--possibly with the lab, possibly with the application of the veneers.
I would be inclined to find another dentist with a lot of experience in veneers and a lot of continuing education under his/her belt.

she could be grinding her teeth at night and cracking them. lots of people grind or clench and don't even know it. A nightguard should be worn to protect them if that is the case. The dentist should also adjust her bit to help avoid this. Should last many years.

UPDATE:
She has been to 2 dentists now her regular dentist and a cosmetic dentist.
She was incorrect the 2nd veneer was 5 years old (after it was replaced after 1 year) time flies!
Both dentists agree that due to her bite angle she should have a crown put on the tooth. Neither dentist will put on another veneer.
BOTH dentists told her that even the best veneers should be scheduled to be replaced every 10 years! Veneers are an expensive project.

I would also have her get a night guard to wear at night. They are 3-5 hundred but I have had mine for over 20 years and it protects your teeth at night. You can't control what you do at night.
a hard acrylic night guard

I've had my veneers for over 2 years and have had no problems; however, they were extremely expensive and I'd like to keep them in good shape for as long as I can! I will check with my dentist regarding that night guard as I think that's excellent info! I had bad gums for years and irregular teeth with staining so the veneers have been a wonderful investment for me. Thanks, ladies!
