I agree, @Shanus , and they always dropped product (eyeshadow) on my cheeks.  They used to always come in drug store shadows.  I usually tossed them.

I "buff" for maximum depth of color, and sheen.    Can only do this with a brush.........

Re: Sponge Applicators for Eyeshadow

For the life of me, I just can't use brushes for eyeshadow. I've seen so many of my friends use them and have an absolutely wonderful look. For me, the color just won't go on, or stay on, even if I use primer. I cannot get the look that I am wanting, with brushes, so I just use the applicators.

Question Shanus, How do I get the brushes to pick up the eyeshadow color, and not get it all over my face when I'm trying to put it on my eyelid? I have gently tapped the brush a few times, but the color just doesn't stay on my lid. Any helpful tips?

Re: Sponge Applicators for Eyeshadow I

I used the sponge applicators more years than I should have.  When I started using brushes, it took a lot of practice, also upgrading to better quality brushes before I learned how to blend eyeshadow without it looking "muddy".

Re: Sponge Applicators for Eyeshadow

@Effie54 Not Shanus, but let's talk. LOL

There are a lot of different types of eye shadow & they work better with different types of applicators. So first you have to determine the texture of the eye shadow. Then you choose a brush (Or sponge or finger-It's makeup. It's fun. You use what works best for you!!).

And, you choose the applicator that fits the space that you are applying it to.

This is for powder shadow application. Cream shadow is totally different, for me.

I use Mac Prep+Prime 24 Hr Extend Eye Base. I squeeze out a tiny amonut onto my ring finder & starting at the lash line pat & blend it up. I blend the edges really well. I don't want the edges grabbing eye shadow.

I tap a small brush (Mac 239) into my lid color & press that onto the lid. (This is where the eye shadow itself makes the difference. Some are more losely pressed or have a  texture that is coarser & you may get fallout.).

Or if I am using the same color from lash & through the crease, I use a larger brush (Mac 252).

These are both brushes with firm bristles that hold & apply the shadow.

Then you can sweep & blend crease colors with brushes that are designed to be softer. (Mac 286 or Morphe M330).

So are there specific eye shadows that you are having problems with? Or brands?

We can talk about those, too!

I just can't do brushes anymore.  I gave it a whole year.  I might use them in limited cases but omgoodness, sponge applicators just work so much better imo.  Anyone still use them?  I've got a whole package of them somewhere.  Like 50!

I didn't even know people used those sponge applicators anymore.  LOL  I can't use them, they never worked for me.  Will always use brushes.  Thank goodness we all have choices.

Re: Sponge Applicators for Eyeshadow

I am not the make-up expert you all are, but I prefer brushes.  I think the only time I have used sponges is when they come with the eyeshadow.  I think they are kind of gross, and hard to clean, and I don't see myself using a new one every time.  Brushes are easier to clean, and I have no application issues, but whenever I wear eyeshadow, I don't do fancy things.  I like eyeshadow pencils most!  (Not the pencil like tip.)  Easy!

Re: Sponge Applicators for Eyeshadow

@LTT1  My favorite drugstore eyeshadow has always been CG, after that is Almay.  Great texture, staying power and colors . Revlon and Maybelline can't compete.. Enjoy the new color, I have it, it's pretty. .
