Years ago I had an issue and was told not to return the item. Another time I had a problem and was told that I had to return the item. So not sure what the standard answer is.

Return policies like QVC's 30 day one pay for themselves. Most people who are dissatisfied take the path of least resistance and just throw out or give away anything they don't like. And more people who are on the fence about buying an item sight unseen from a video are likely to try it when they have the reassurance they can get their money back.
As long as you actually see your purchases as buying the item as opposed to trying it on--like people who buy multiple shades or sizes of clothing and then return the ones that don't work out--you probably won't run afoul of QVC's "naughty letters." Abusers have to be weeded out before they affect prices or the bottom line.
Virtual shopping, which is what QVC and Amazon and all online sales are doing, requires a stronger return policy to get over the hump of not being able to judge and try an item in person. Amazon would never have taken off the way it did without the A-Z return policy. And if they got rid of it, their sales would suffer greatly, which is why it's still there.
You don't have to return makeup or skincare physically, because it's illegal I believe for QVC to recondition or resell it. A computer say, on the other hand, they can.

this is true, that they can't resell used make up. neither can sephora, ulta, or any retailer. just because they can't resell it, doesn't mean you don't have to return it.
i can see the conversation now, at sephora. i'll bring in my receipt, no product, and ask for a refund. bwhahahaha!
i believe they get some type of a credit from the vendor for used, unsellable cosmetics.

@SunnysMom I thought I heard that, too. I think it was Caroline this past weekend when she was doing the IT show. I have never heard of this policy before. I always return the containers of beauty products. This would be much easier to just fill out a form online.
I realize you are still going to get hit with the $6.95 fee plus the original shipping fee. That means the cost is almost $11 just to try a product.
That is why I try to know as much about an item before purchasing so I don't end up sorry. I don't need to know how many of something a host has or if their sister, mother, owns it or the whole rundown of where they wore it yada yada.
Just the facts not a personal biography.

You are right. Bricks and mortar stores are different.
Ulta has been in the news for isolated locations putting clean looking returned items back out on the shelves. It was a big hoo ha.

Best to speak with someone from Customer Service, it must depend on who you get. Yesterday I did a live Chat about a makeup issue, and was told to return it and they will credit me.

Been a Q shopper since the 90's and I've always returned make-up that didn't work out. I would like to know if we do not have to return (as is the case for food). Returns are so costly. I would like to know the rules and to which products it applies.-- face make-up, soaps, creams and lotions, etc.?

I wonder if that is correct or not. I cannot even imagine the number of dishonest people that will claim they didn't like something and get it for free. And people complain about Q's prices going up.
I always returned mine but, the last time I called QVC about defective makeup, the CS rep told me to just toss it. My money was quickly refunded, too.
