Re: Question about using people WEN on pets.

Has she seen a vet yet? I would talk to them about shampoos for her. If you have a local pet store (not a chain store) that carries good premium dog food and organic products I would go there and ask.

I can't remember, are you in the Seattle area? If so, check out Mud Bay.

Fish oil caps on the dog's food is the best thing for dry skin.

Re: Question about using people WEN on pets.

I have used my Wen on my Chihuahua with no issues. If she has flaky skin, diet probably has a lot to do with it. When I got my Chocolate Lab puppy, the breeder fed him Puppy Chow and he had lots of flakes in his fur and his coat was dull. I switched him to a good, grain-free food (Taste of the Wild) and his coat is gorgeous now! I would also suggest some Frontline (or whatever your vet suggests) for fleas. It only takes one flea biting to make her really itchy and miserable

Yes she saw a Vet when I first found her, but she wasn't having this scratching issue then. I don't live in Seattle... live in the middle of Kansas (small city), but we have a Petco and that is where I go for her food. They do have lots of organic brands, but there are so many different theories on what is best for dogs. When I got my beloved Chinook, I was told by the internationally acclaimed Alameda East Vet Hospital (they had the Vet tv show on the planet channel) to give him Eukanuba, but over time they changed their formulas, and it seemed he did better with Pro Plan. I wish our furbabies could tell us what they want.... right now I think she eats because she was being starved, and of course I want the best for her health and nutrition.

Re: Question about using people WEN on pets.

Congratulations on rescuing your new puppy, rescues are so loving. I always used RTM on my German shepherd when she was with us, she loved POM. I believe. Chaz used the oils on his Angels but call his CS as the others suggested. Bless you for saving this puppy and treating him well.

Re: Question about using people WEN on pets.

I just remembered that there is a hydrocorizone (sp?) spray for dogs. My son brought home his friends dog for a visit and she had very dry skin that was itching her. This spray did seem to help immediately. We purchased it in the pet store.

Re: Question about using people WEN on pets.

She could very well be itching/scratching due to the flea treatment. Depending on what they used on her it may have dried her skin and aggravated it.

Be careful if using any sprays. We bought a soothing spray for one of our dogs that was itchy also. We ran it by the vet first and he said he wouldn't use it because one of the ingredients was alcohol. We had to find the right food for our dog and probiotics and he does pretty good now.

I had a friend that had skin/coat issues with her mini Australian Shepherd. She started using a good dog food (German brand that I can't remember the name of) and salmon oil added to the food. It helped a lot.

Re: Question about using people WEN on pets.

I just now chatted online with customer service at wen dot com. The woman I spoke with said that from the regular Wen line they ONLY recommend sweet almond mint for dogs. I'll try it on our golden retriever next time.

P.S. We give our golden 1 tablespoon of olive oil in her breakfast - to control itching and, hopefully, make her coat more shiny.

Whoever said "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" would retract that statement after looking into the eyes of a Golden Retriever!

Thank you soooooo much!!!! I have the SAM, but only in CC and the replenishing treatment mist. I will put a few squirts on her, since it can't hurt. Perhaps I will bathe her soon at home using the SAM CC rather than taking her back to the groomer. Obviously there are lots of things to consider, and olive oil or fish oil supplements are one of them. I do have salmon treats for her that have fish oil in them, but she hasn't had enough of those in her system to make a difference. I adore her, just want her to be healthy, and she seems pretty happy, she is putting on weight. Her coat is not dull, it is actually very jet black and sleek and pretty....except for the new dandruff Smiley Sad

I sure appreciate all the advice, you ladies are a plethora of information in the best possible way, which is why I asked here. {#emotions_dlg.wub}

Thank you RCG, you make an excellent point, it could very well be the flea treatment she is reacting to. So many things it could be. It is frustrating, because it is hard to narrow down what is creating it... climate, food, allergies... I lost my sweet Chinook when he was nearly 14 years old, so it's been a long time since I had a puppy. I had forgotten how much "fun" it is to get them sorted. At least she isn't cold or starving or dirty or homeless, and I'll figure out this flaky skin thing for her.

I appreciate all your help, you all keep giving me options to consider, and it helps to learn from others experiences. You're all very kind. Thanks again. Smile
