Everyone's complexion is different.... so it depends.  I use primer to control oil -- some primers keep away "the greasies" for me and keep my foundation fresh all day.  I've tried several and currently like the Cover Girl oil-control primer in the white tube.  But it would be too drying for some complexions.

I also like Mally's neutralizing foundation because it evens out my skin tone -- I can wear it alone, in place of foundation, for daily runs around town.  Problem is, it doesn't control oil and I need to blot it after a couple hours.

I've tried 2 different formulations of LG's Spackle and they both made my skin greasy and my foundation slid off my face.  If you have dry skin, they may work for you.

I have oily skin in the T Zone and dryness around my mouth.  I need a primer to contol the oil slick and soften and sooth the dry areas.

I love Hourglass mineral veil primer-hate the price.

But my make-up looks flawless all day with no touch-ups.  Without it I would have to powder and blot a lot and still have 'disappearing' make-up.

@SeaMaiden  I personally don’t use a primer. I see it as an unnessary step that just takes time. I’ve also experimented w/ many that caused my tinted moisturizer/foundation to roll...most likely the silicones.

@Katcat1  I agree. It is rare that I keep my makeup on for 12 hours. I also don’t like the premise that it seals in moisture before foundation. I want my skin to breathe as much as possible.

Merle Norman 24k Firming Foundation Primer is wonderful ! Ask for a sample before purchasing. I did and bought the bottle.

I do not use primers all the time.  I have quite a few different ones and like to switch around.  If I am using a liquid or cream foundation that is really moisturizing, then I don't usually use one.  If I am using Balance 'n Brighten, then I usually do.  I like LG's regular primer.

This seems to be a topic of conversation on other sites that I have seen. Some experts claim that it's a marketing gimmick. Other experts claims that it helps to smooth out any crevices, etc. that may be on the skin. One site had an illustration of the skin under a microscope showing craters and valleys. For myself I like to use a primer because it's an added layer of hyration and brilliance. My skin is dry so I welcome all of the hydration that I can get. For me one product does not do it alone. There are primers without silicone in them. If you really want to find what works for you, go to Sephora. They won't push any certain brand and they assess what your skin needs.

@SeaMaiden   I use Bare Minerals Primer. I think of it as a barrier to make up . I'm hoping I absorb less into my skin. I also think it looks better.

@Shanus  Think about when you were growing up and your mom wore foundation.  The foundation was no where near what we have today. Primer?   What is primer?  Women did not have primer back then.  The cosmetic industry has a way to introduce new products and make you think you need them. It's always about making money.
