Can someone please give me some advice..
We have a 14 month old Rottweiler. We took him to 2 different obedience training classes with the same lady. He actually won 1st prize in the basic class. We learned sit, down, come, stay, and heel up all with verbal and hand signals. She did not allow the dogs to interact in the class at all. We have always had Rottweilers and they have all been calm, good mannered dogs. He is a very good dog at home and when we take him to the park or walks he follows all commands well. He is very loving and sweet with us and my daughters friends that come over. He is not aggressive towards people at all.
My problem is when he sees other dogs he goes nuts. He growls at them and we cannot control him. He would sometimes growl at the other dogs in the classes too but she would just say 'put him in a down'. We use a prong collar because the regular basic collar chokes him(per her advice). He doesnt do anything to the dogs he just wants to play with them so bad. When he was a puppy we took him to a dog park. The instructor said this is what did this to him and dog parks are not good. Well, he loves to play with other dogs. We took him again to the dog park and he bounces, runs and plays well with other dogs.
So, what is causing him to go nuts when he sees other dogs? Even in the house he starts barking and growling when dogs walk by. Its like hes in another world and does not listen to stop.
I tried to take him to a 'paws in the park' outing today and we werent in the park 20 feet when he went crazy at every dog he saw. He practically broke my thumb. I took him home! It was not enjoyable at all. A lady at the park said he acts like this because he sleeps in our bed!?
Any advice on how we tackle this problem? I am at a loss. I don't really wanna spend another 140.00 for another class. We have tried 'being calm', taking control, and giving verbal commands/down but he just seems to go into another world when he sees dogs.
