I don't give my SS# out to anyone.

I haven't applied for a credit card in many years because I have the basics and don't want tons of individual store credit cards, so I don't know if it's the norm or not but I wouldn't give mine out either....

@GingerHead

Still a lot of places asking for it.

I read to not put it on the papers you fill out at the doctor's office. I don't like giving out mine either.

My new doctor sent my invoice to pay by email. Has click here. I don't click on links in email or to pay a bill?

I told DH we have had all the info safe for years. Now that we are both on SS, Medicare, etc everyone & your dog has our information. So much for keeping it safe???

Yes, everyone asks for it....it's annoying.

Many years ago, against my better judgement, I gave it out at a new dermatologist and months after doing so I got a notice in the mail saying that they had had a security breach and all their patients info was compromised.

After that I went to a new doctor and they asked for it on their forms and I left it blank and when they questioned me about it and said they couldn't see me if I didn't provide it I just left...

I don't give it out now at all and the doctors I see don't require it....

The new (unwelcome) thing in California is for doctors to require a credit card even if you've paid them in literal cash. It's so they can charge additional fees. The office manager at my derm is crazy aggressive. My doctor has to talk with her. If I am in the waiting room, I can hear her argue with every patient over it. The last time I required some treatment, the office manager tried to charge me to have my stitches removed. In California, by law, it is considered aftercare and is included in the price of the procedure. My derm had to tell her not to charge me. I don't know why my derm (who is excellent) puts up with her. Sorry, I think I got way off topic.

I'm thinking maybe there was a miscomunication as I just wanted to replace an awards card. I used to have one but cannot find it now. I rarely give out my social security #. Of course doctors, banks, insurance,etc.

@jubilant As far as I know Ulta doesn't really use those rewards cards anymore.  They just ask for your phone number and if you are a rewards member your name will pop up and they'll ask if that's you.  You'll get your rewards.  I haven't used that card in ages and am glad I don't need to carry all those rewards cards around.

At one time DH had a whole bunch of rewards mini cards on his keychain.  I don't want all that to carry around.

The only catch for me is, I have to remember which phone number  used.  Most are my landline, but at some point it looks like I'll get rid of that and will probably need to change it to my cell number.  Then, theyll probably start sending me a bunch of text messages.

Wow, now that's crazy! Unfortunately some places try to bully you into submission. I don't know if you read my other post above but I actually had to walk out when a new doc told me a SS# was required.

Makes it uncomfortable to go in, I guess you have to mentally prepare for battle everytime you do, at least your doctor is on your side. But, yeah, if I were the doc I wouldn't put up with that rudness.  Annoying!

Once I paid off my store cards years ago, I haven't got another one since either.  I do miss my Belk card because they have one that allows ZERO interest if you pay the balance within 90 days.  I'm always tempted to get another, but so far haven't.😃❤️

@cheriere @jubilant @GingerHead

We keep the Belk one for that reason.

If you are making application for a credit card they will require your SS number.  However, in this day and age I cannot see why they cannot do this with just the last four digits of your social.  A lot of businesses have been doing that for a long time.

@jubilant: Count your lucky stars that you changed your mind because. Ulta uses Comenity Bank which is a scam of a credit card issuer.

Yep, I saw what you wrote about walking out on a doctor's appointment.

It's aggravating that now so many things "require" an ID, ss, or a credit card. I worked for a company that initially required an SS and DL# to apply for a job. It's fine once you move on in the process, but they don't need it upfront. I went to HR and asked how we were protecting this information as it came in on a form and lots of people had access. I was told to sit down and shut up.

@cactusgal I've never had a problem with them.  In fact, I've never had a problem with ANY credit card issuer except that I don't like that $2 charge Synchrony adds to get paper statements for their card and the Lowes card, so I'm not using them.  All store cards have ridiculous interest rates compared to the major credit cards.

@Icegoddess

That's why the only department store card we have is Belk which gives you a no-interest if you pay within 90 days and moreover, if you have their card, you get discounts on "stuff."  If you don't have their app on your phone, you still get the discount because you are a card holder.  If they don't give it to you, report them.
