I don't give my SS# out to anyone.

I haven't applied for a credit card in many years because I have the basics and don't want tons of individual store credit cards, so I don't know if it's the norm or not but I wouldn't give mine out either....

@GingerHead

Still a lot of places asking for it.

I read to not put it on the papers you fill out at the doctor's office. I don't like giving out mine either.

My new doctor sent my invoice to pay by email. Has click here. I don't click on links in email or to pay a bill?

I told DH we have had all the info safe for years. Now that we are both on SS, Medicare, etc everyone & your dog has our information. So much for keeping it safe???

You're too right about everyone needing it these days, especially at drs offices.  I was surprised my dentist needed mine even though I'm a self pay patient.  Just doesn't make sense sometimes.

Yes, everyone asks for it....it's annoying.

Many years ago, against my better judgement, I gave it out at a new dermatologist and months after doing so I got a notice in the mail saying that they had had a security breach and all their patients info was compromised.

After that I went to a new doctor and they asked for it on their forms and I left it blank and when they questioned me about it and said they couldn't see me if I didn't provide it I just left...

I don't give it out now at all and the doctors I see don't require it....

Re: No More Ulta For Me

[ Edited ]

Yes--and I NEVER give that out for something like that. I see it mostly on paperwork at the various drs and dentists offices. And I still don't let them have it. No one has ever mentioned that being omitted at all and if they do I will still refuse. And I don't need any more credit cards anyway--use  my debit card or cash only.

Once I paid off my store cards years ago, I haven't got another one since either.  I do miss my Belk card because they have one that allows ZERO interest if you pay the balance within 90 days.  I'm always tempted to get another, but so far haven't.😃❤️

@cheriere , I still have store cards.  As long as you pay them off every month, you don't get hit by their excess interest charge.  I no longer use my Lowe's card though since Synchrony manages it and it now has that $2 paper statement fee.  I'm waiting for the same thing to happen with my Belk card since Synchrony manages that card too.

Speaking of the Belk card, they must've changed their terms to get the 90 day zero interest.  I think the balance has to be higher for that.  I don't use mine often, but did buy some shoes recently and just got my bill.  The charge was for $83.11 for two pair of shoes and I noticed the Special Plan Payment is $75.  The Total Minimum Payment due is $29, but that accrues interest.

Ulta actually has two credit cards.  They have their own store card, or you can choose an Ulta Master Card.  I have their Master Card.  No idea if the interest rate is any different or if it's just that I can use the MC at other sites.

I went to the Ulta store last week. I don't have an Ulta Card so I started to apply for one and they asked me for my social security number???? I couldn't believe it. None of the places I shop at have  "needed" that so I told them to forget it and that I didn't give my soc. security # out. Has this happened to anyone else?

That's their credit card, not their rewards card.  They don't need your social security number for their rewards card.  You must have been applying for their credit card.  That's how they run your credit with your social security number.

I'm thinking maybe there was a miscomunication as I just wanted to replace an awards card. I used to have one but cannot find it now. I rarely give out my social security #. Of course doctors, banks, insurance, etc.

Thanks ladies...it must have been a misunderstanding. She was mumbling and I don't hear as well as I used to. Again thanks for setting me straight!

Rewards cards don't require a SS# anywhere. They must have thought you wanted a CC.
