Hi, MJ! I was thinking of that when I started reading this thread. Is this the one? It has interesting info on this topic, in my opinion:

It means she was born in America, OK? Can I get any clearer? Or are you trying to start an internet fire?

Wow. I am an American (I have a passport to prove it) but I wasn't born in America. Flame on.

The attitudes here never cease to amaze me. Hey, there, my fellow American! {#emotions_dlg.wub}

I notice that. Just about every day on one thread or another. We seem to be going backward instead of progressing.{#emotions_dlg.unsure}

Trust me, they can speak English. They just don't.

They speak $$$.

"They"???????

Why the need to talk about a whole group of people as if they aren't even individuals? Some probably speak English fairly well; others, not so much.

And anyway, good for them if they do speak $$$. Isn't that the "American" way?

They are a group of people. I never said they were not individuals. And stop trying to twist what everyone says to mean something you want it to mean. And there is no "American Way" anymore.

what do you mean there is no "American Way" anymore?

this country was founded on the fact immigrants brought their talents and knowledge here to add to our work force.

Or...could you possibly mean trying to get away with working the system to make money when you are not licensed or qualified to do so? That's not the "American Way". That is simply against the law. {#emotions_dlg.glare}

I recall reading the same thread. Many posted that she could get in a lot of trouble and especially if someone got an infection and tried to sue her. You can have a home business but still must be licensed. I know of some hairdressers who prefer to work at home because they have small children but they are still licensed.

Re: Nail Techs (Need A License?)

To open a place of business to do hair and/or nails, the shop must be licensed. In addition, the stylists and/or nail tech must be licensed also. All of these licenses MUST be displayed.

I had to laugh when I read that there is only 1 inspector in each state. You have got to be kidding. There are many. They inspect hair salons, funeral homes, real estate agents, doctors. clinics and many, many more professions and establishments.

I have had inspectors come into my business open cabinets and count clean towels. They especially look at santizing equiptment and chemicals and make sure they are approved and used correctly. Trash cans must be covered, dirty towels must be in a covered container, etc.

The owner does not have to be licensed, but can't work on clents unless he/she is.

Most states allow students to work in a salon as an apprentice. There must be someone with a teachers or managers licensed employed in the shop to do this. They are supposed to be teaching and overseeing these students until they are ready to take their exam for a license.

I have to be honest and say that I worked in a salon that did massage and facials. The owner who was not licensed, hired 2 very beautiful ladies who were unlicensed to work there. They did not have apprentice status, There was a licensed manager employed there as well. The state board agents came into the shop and the very next day, those 2 ladies were gone. I suspect someone turned the owner in.

I would never, never in a million years have my nails done by a unlicensed person or in a dirty place of business. I have personally seen and heard horror stories of infections and diseases spread through equiptment in a salon. It's not a joke.

Be careful ladies.

Do nail techs need a license to do manicures/pedicures? Who regulates these places?

Check your state via google - ""nail salon (your state)"".

In New York ... the information/application is 7 pages long.

You're welcome, MJ! It was quick to find because I remembered I posted on it regarding licenses. Posters offered lots of good, helpful information on that thread.

all I know about nail techs is that you are supposed to buy them a Christmas gift according to QVC
