My first Deva Cut for Curly Hair

I have been fighting my curls for the last few years. I blow dry it everyday to get it to look straight and "normal," but I am too tired to do that anymore. My daughter said that my hair was "too styled" and was looking a little helmet headed like and old lady. She suggested that I leave my hair natural.

Well, I did but I didn't know how to style it. So  I bought the book Curly Girl on Amazon. Read it from cover to cover and realized that I knew nothing about curly hair. So I found a Deva Curl specialist about 33 miles away in another state. She just happed to have a cancellation the next day! So I went.

It cost $85 for a consultation, cut,  and style that took 2.5 hours. This is just for the first deval cut then you only have to get my hair cut every three months at $60. I was paying $55 for a haircut every 6 weeks plus I was getting my hair highlighted every 12 weeks. Now I can wait to get it highlighted to every three months or four times a year.

Was it worth it? Yes, it was worth every penny. I had been growing out my shorter hairstyle that had tons of unneeded layers. She took each curl individually cut them and shaped them into a style that works for my curls. I am attaching a photo of the back since I don't think that we can show our faces. So this is my natural hair with just gel.curly.jpg

Re: My first Deva Cut for Curly Hair

Another naturally curl female who fought it for years! Have never died or permed my hair. In the last 15 years have found a stylist who knows how to cut my hair . . . and what a difference it makes. I simply shampoo it gently towel it dry. Scrunch my hair with my fingers and let those curls dry naturally! No gels. For the first time in my life, I love those curls. Why did I sleep on orange juice cans as a teen? Why have I ironed my hair? Why have I wasted so much time each morning trying to "help" it do something it clearly wasn't going to stay in place all day? Enjoy your curls and love the extra time you have in life! You hair is gorgeous!

@Squirrel Lover, I think your hair looks very nice. It’s funny how no one is ever happy with what they have. If you have straight hair you want curly, if you have curly hair you want straight.

Love the curls..  Your hair looks so good.  My hair is more wavy than curly...  And it's cut short now.   Anyway, you did good, real good with that cut and style.......

@Squirrel Lover

Your hair looks lovely!  I may have to rethink my once curly hair.

I say "once" as I've been having it "smoothed" for several years.

For years, I had the most beautiful curly hair -- wore it in a long "shag" style -- Woman would stop me and ask where I got my curls done.  I could "wash and wear" in no time -- it was heavenly.

As I aged, I think the curl pattern changed and I could not get a good cut to save my soul.  In the summer, my curls turned to a cotton candy looking mess.  More frizz than curls.

So, I let it grow out all one length and had it smoothed.  It is still easy to style, but, I do miss my curls.

Might have to look into going to a Deva Salon if I can find one in Maryland.

@Squirrel Lover...your curls are da bomb woman! Never fight them; they’re beautiful! I have hair just like that, only shorter bob style. Using a diffuser to dry your hair will bring volume to your curls you never knew you had before!
