I recently started to use brushes to put on my eye shadow and concealer. I used to use those sponge applicators and my fingers. Any suggestions on how to handle the brushes as far as cleaning them? I have Trish McEvoy, Suzanne Somers and ybf. I use a separate brush for each type of make up but how often should I wash them?

Right now I wash the concealer brush (TM) every other day since it's a liquid concealer but once a week for my eye shadow since that is dry.

TIA...{#emotions_dlg.confused1}

I noticed when I was checking out ELF products on their website that they carry a brush cleanser. I've read you don't need any special cleanser but this was cheap...

I just use liquid soap and water and only wash them when they seem dirty. I use an eyeliner brush and wash it each time I use it though. That's what I've done for years. Make sure to lay the brushes flat when they're drying.

I use Baby Shampoo to clean my brushes. I use to use a brush cleaner but that works just as well. If you just have one brush for liquid foundation & concealer every other day is fine, just wipe it off with a tissue. As far as shadow brushes once a wk. is fine as well as brushes for loose mineral foundations or setting powders. The same with the shadows etc. wipe them off with a tissue with every use. Some women wash them more often but I think what your doing is fine. If you have oily skin & you use a compact foundation/ mineral powder, I would get another foundation brush & wash it daily to not tranfer the oil from your face on to the product.

There any many inexpensive brushes that work well so you can switch them up with what you have now. Some of them work just as well as the more expensive ones. I have both.

To clean them since you have a few, just put some shampoo or a mild dish detergent in the palm of your hand, wet the brush & swirl it around the cleanser & rinse off & give a little squeese back into shape. Just make sure not to let the water run into ferrell of the brush handle but away from it. Lay on a dish towel or paper towel to dry.

Over a course of time I have collected quite a few brushes so I don't need to wash them as often.

When you say that you use a different brush for each type of make up. Do you mean each brand of makeup? Or a different type? Say one for eyeshadow, one for foundation, and concealer?

One for eye shadow and another one for concealer and when I wear foundation, another brush for that. So, since I use a separate brush for each, I wasn't sure how often I should wash them.

I use pretty nice brushes so I know they can take washings but I didn't want to wash them if there is no need to. I know they have to be washed, just wasn't sure how often.

I did just get a Beautylish email selling brush trees! According to the email brushes, after washing, should be hung up brush side down. Don't lay them down and don't hang them brush side up. If there is any validity to these tips I do not know....but I do see where the 'don't lay them down' makes some sense..

for the record I wipe my brushes with a tissue after each use; I wash much less often

Ulta has a nice little brush cleaning kit that comes with the cleaner and little "girdles" so your brushes keep their shape while drying, instead of splaying.

Yes! I have that and love it. The kit is by Brush Guard and the "girdles" are called Brush Guards. You can also buy more Brush Guards from Walmart.

Here's a great tutorial how how to wash brushes: http://thebeautydepartment.com/2012/09/how-to-properly-wash-your-brushes/

I did this until I bought Brush Guards, which do basically the same thing but don't dry the brushes as quickly.
