Is there a Powder SPF you really like?

Hi Ladies,

I use SPF every day and apply it prior to doing my MU in the morning. I just realized today that a powdered SPF, one I could tuck into my MU bag, would be very handy to have on hand. Perfect, perhaps, for when I can spontaneously meet up with a friend outside for a walk, or when I end up spending more time outside then I originally anticipated. I also like the idea of a powder that I can quickly brush over my face for some added protection WITHOUT it interfering with my regular MU.

I know PTR has one. I think I maybe even tried it a few years back (sad that I can't remember.) But is there anything out there in this category that you just love? Sort of a hybrid MU/skin care product that I can dusted on? For better protection when you need it?

I love "Jane Iredale's" powder foundation. It is good for your skin too.

If you want a drugstore one, try "Neutrogena's mineral sheers foundation". It even has a sponge in the compact. I do use a lot of their products.

I posted about a pale pink setting powder a day or two ago. It is Holika Holika Strawberry Pore Magic Cover Powder SPF50. It is a cute little round container (between a golf ball and a tennis ball size) with a small puff. The powder is great because it covers your pores, sets your mu and has the SPF50. It can be ordered from ebay and most run around 10.00-13.00. If you were in a hurry costsell.com on ebay sells it for 18.99 and they ship from the US. Otherwise it takes about 3 weeks to get it.

I've been wanting to try the Colorescience Sunforgettable Mineral Makeup, it comes in a brush like the PTR and they have spf 30 and 50 but it's kind of pricey..

I love the shiseido spf powder compact. It has a finely milled flawless finish. You do have to make sure to find the right shade though so I would test it in the store before purchasing to make sure it works for your skin tone and skin type.

I could be wrong, but I just read somewhere that powders can no longer be considered for SPF protection.

I may have read it here or in a magazine.

I wondered about BE's line and what would happen to it if this is the case.

There is NO powder that provides serious SPF protection. It would have to contain at least 12% zinc oxide, AND it would also have to be applied heavily enough to do the job. Titanium dioxide is in a lot of brands, but it's not a big-deal sunscreen.

Despite the best efforts of companies around the world, there's no replacement for an avobenzone or zinc oxide sunscreen (min of 12%) sunscreen that's applied properly.

The Colorescience powder has 24.1% zinc oxide and 23% of titanium dioxide...

Thanks for the info Kat. Although I didn't ask the question, I have been looking for the same thing.

I was "this close" to trying the Elf SPF 45 powder, but there were too many complaints that is it too orange for lighter skin tones.

I found the Holika Holika on ebay for $11.69 from a US seller. Since I have a very light complexion with pink undertones, it sounds like it's just what I've been looking for!

Re: Is there a Powder SPF you really like?

Some of Bare Minerals Mineral Veils now contain SPF. I picked up one that is a 5 in 1 BB Mineral Veil (found it on ebay) They have others as well though I do not know all the various names. I believe they even offer a version of the original Mineral Veil now with added SPF. There are a ton of them, all new, on ebay, most for good prices. Some sellers seem to think they are selling pure gold but the majority are really reasonable.

My biggest issue with this type of product is they can be terribly drying on the skin and my skin has enough dryness already. I've tried Colorescience and it just made me look like a prune. I ordered two of BE's Mineral Veils to see if they might not be as drying. Just received them so haven't tried them out yet.

I believe I also tried PTR's and found that to also be drying but that was years ago now so maybe it has improved now.

I would never depend on any of these for my primary sun protection but I think if you are generous enough with the application, they could be helpful as additional coverage for those occasions you mentioned.
