Hi Ladies,
I'm sure there's some hard and fast rule out there somewhere. However, I wanted to check with my Beauties here about what works for you. What is your rule about keeping nail polish?
I have a Sterilite container filled with most of my nail stuff. I occasionally go through and toss bottles that have separated, or are just old, or LOOK old, or just plain didn't work for me. I am not afraid of tossing something that I spent "good money" on. If it's just going to sit, or if it's old, I'm throwing it away.
How do you store and keep your nail polish? How long do you keep yours?
TIA

My system is similar to yours, only my stuff is in a Longaberger Spring Basket.

Hi JLF-Your storage sounds MUCH prettier than mine. Maybe that's why I don't organize it as much???

My system is similar to both of yours. I have a tin box that I keep my nail supplies in so I can just grab it all at once. I usually sort thru it twice a year and throw out anything that is separating or looks old or too low in the bottle. If I see a nail TSV that prompts me to check my supply.

I pretty much use the see thru box method. Separate by brand.
You can use thinner for polishes that get thick. Polish doesn't go *bad*.
See if your town recycles, instead of throwing them in the trash;-))

Nail polish never goes bad and has no expiration date. Some of my most prized polishes are the oldest ones I have and some I went to great lengths to track down, so there's no way I'm throwing it out because it's old. If it separates, I shake it. If it gets goopy, I thin in. If it's sitting around and I don't like it, I trade it or give it away to my friends who might want it. If no one wants it, I collect it in a container to take to my city's household chemical disposal place so it can be properly disposed of.
I keep mine in a Helmer from Ikea. Before I had so many, I kept mine in Sterlite containers and they worked really well for me. I used the shoebox size with the drawer. I know some people who keep them on display on wall mounted racks, which looks beautiful. I'd do that, but I grew up in California and can't shake the earthquake idea enough to put glass bottles full of chemicals up on a wall shelf, even though I now live in a place with no earthquakes.

You can buy Beauty Secret thinner from Sally Beauty. It's cheap and as effective as any more expensive thinner I've used. It's Big 3 Free, but also works in older nail polishes that do have toluene.
Seche Restore is also a great thinner, but it has toluene. If you have a B3F polish and use Restore, you'll be adding toluene and other chemicals that weren't there before. It won't harm the polish and, unless you drink it or lock yourself in a small unventilated room with it, it won't harm you, either. But some people, especially pregnant women, prefer to avoid toluene and the other chemicals removed from the B3F formulas.

I very rarely finish a whole bottle. It ends up getting goopy and too thick. I like to change my colors out so it's hard to finish an entire bottle. My daughter and I share a large make-up bag filled with polishes, files and clippers.

I never heard of an expiration period for nail polish. I have more bottles than some nail shops; I keep them until they get too thick or separate.
