Re: Help with yellowing hair

Nexxus makes a very good shampoo for gray hair that removes the yellowing. I don't remember the name of the shampoo but you can buy it most anywhere now, drugstores and Walmart, Target etc.

Re: Help with yellowing hair

The dull grey hair and yellowing may be due to the water you use to shampoo. If your water isn't treated the minerals in it may be the culprit.

Re: Help with yellowing hair

Oops! Should have mentioned I'm a Wen Lavender user. All Lavender, all the time. It's the styling products I use that darken the silver if I spike it up. Goopy stuff.

Roux Fanci-Full is a line of leave-in temporary color that comes in several shades for white/gray hair (White Minx is one) Don't get caught in the rain though...it will run. Rinses out easily and seems to act as a styling product.

Clairol had a line of semi-permanent colors for gray, from steel to pure white. Discontinued. Guess there aren't enough of us who dare to go natural, with a little help.

TX for your answers. All are helpful. Also got a suggestion to use apple cider vinegar as a final rinse (14 C in 16 oz water).

Re: Help with yellowing hair

Years ago when I used to dye my hair platinum we used a rinse that was in a gray bottle with a pink pop up top. It was the best ever and in all the salons for gray hair. You put it on your hair, didn't rinse it out, but it shampooed out. Used to also get it at Sally's when our highlights got a little brassy or greenish ( yuck I know) from the pool. Wonder if it's still out there?

Maybe I should read everything before I post...I think the Roux Fanci-full might be what I was talking about. The bottle looks different but yet kinda familiar. I don't remember it running if you got wet in the rain but then again, maybe it did. Seems like we only had to use it a couple of times and then our hair was ok. We were dying though. The good ole days :-)

Re: Help with yellowing hair

There are widely available. I buy them in CVS and/or Walgreens

Clairol Shimmer Lights Shampoo
Protein-enriched conditioning formula tones down brassiness on blonde and silver hair, renews and refreshes faded highlights and ash-toned hair, removes the dull yellow in silver hair, and leaves hair shiny without residue

Jhirmack Silver Plus Shampoo

This color-safe shampoo also neutralizes brassy, yellow tones while enhancing highlights and improving your hair's elasticity. Green tea extract and folic acid help strengthen and condition your hair, while CoQ10 helps shield hair from color fading and damage caused by styling and environmental stressors. Macadamia nut oil moisturizes rough and limp hair without leaving your scalp greasy. This shampoo will give you the luminous hair you've been looking for.

Re: Help with yellowing hair

I use Pantene Silver Expressions everyday when I shampoo. My hair is not blue, nor is my shower curtain, towels, etc. I always try protect my hair from getting yellow.

Some medications are known to change hair color. Liver disease or other medical conditions are known to make skin and eyes yellow.. If you eat an abundance of carrots or other foods that are high in carotene, an orange compound, it might make skin and hair yellow. A smokers hair might be yellowed by nicotine. The water you use to wash your hair will turn your hair yellow if it has a high iron content. Swimming in a heavily chlorinated pool might turn your hair yellow too.

Hair spray and other hair products can burn and stain your hair yellow when you use hot appliances to curl or straighten your hair.

You can make a rinse from a small amount of vinegar and water (1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar to 1 gallon of water) to remove yellow from your hair. Make sure you rinse thoroughly to remove all of the vinegar.

It helps to use a shampoo made for silver, gray or blonde hair to keep the hair bright and keep the yellow away.

If you smoke that will cause your hair to turn yellow or have yellow streaks.
