I use Yelp, because you have to pay for Angie's list. And yes, I always ask the people I know who have great hair and try to ask people with similar hair types. My friend has a great style that's short and straight with a lot of texture and I love it, but my hair is wavy/curly and there's no way it would look that way without a LOT of effort on my part and even then it wouldn't last through the day. Another friend has great long curls and she's the one I asked to get a stylists's name from. I followed up to see his reviews on Yelp and really liked him until he moved.

Thanks Ladies, your info. helps. I have wavy and kind of thick hair, so I think certain stylists are better at cutting layers in my hair, their out there I just have to find them.

I emailed a local newscaster whose hair cut I liked, to find out who cut her hair and discovered when he cut mine that he cuts many of the local newscasters' hair, male & female.

kind of suspected you have wavy hair. wavy hair is tricky, you have to find a good stylist. people will be thrilled if you ask them about their hair, its a true compliment. get some recs and book a consultation at a salon. ask s/he for suggestions for your wavy hair and how they would cut it. if they are clueless, move on. another suggestion, you didn't say if you blow dry your hair. ask for a wash and blow dry or style to see how the stylist works and their expertise

I usually let my hair air dry since the layers bring out the waves more, then I'll blow out my hair upside down for some body. It gets frizzy if I blow dry all of it. That's another thing, when they blow dry my hair it doesn't look right, comes out too poofy. Think that's a good idea talking to someone to see how they would cut my hair. I've just had so many bad haircuts I get nervous who I go to.

One trick to selecting a salon, they never have fancy ads. Never. It is simple. When you peek in a salon, never choose the one with the great hair style and cut. Find out who did hers. If you have wavy?curly hair you might choose a salon that uses the Deva method or Quidad method.

I have heard of a salon in Philadelphia, called Architegt Salon and Gallery. I have not been there, just know someone who has. She has long, wavy hair, with a pony tail about 2 inches thick!.

If you are in the Media area, I would try Jordan Thomas. For me, they do a great job and everyone coming out of that salon - men and women - always look great.

The last two times I've moved I simply kept my eyes open for someone with a great cut, color, and style. Once found, I asked if the person would kindly share their stylist's information with me. It's worked out so well. I've had several great stylists as a result.
