@Feliciti wrote:Is 7n actually blonde? On their web site it looks like a medium brown. I'm interested in trying Herbatint but am confused by their "blondes," some of which don't look remotely blonde by my defintion. Thanks.
Yep.
Medium browns usually start with the number 5.
"N" typically stands for neutral.

@Carmiewrote:There are three main types of hair color.. Permanent, Demi permanent.... Lasts about a month or 20 shampoos and semi permanent which lasts about 4-6 shampoos.
Permanent color is probably best for,oat people with gray hair. It completely covers and the color is rich.
Demi and Semi wash out too quick and stain the hair. They can also be very drying to the hair.
Now to answer your question, yes, you can use two different type of colors on your hair. Use the permanent color first. Dry your hair, then apply the Semi or Demi color in the area that you want. If you accidently get some color on the permanent section of your hair..... No harm done.
Don't apply both products to your hair at the same time.
i don't understand the health issues. Yes, color has chemicals, but once it touches your scalp, the chemicals are already in your system. It is not the peroxide used in permanent color that is bad, it's the other ingredients including the pigments. Those ingredients are in Demi and Semi colors too.
Best of luck.
ETA...
Thanks a lot.
I was hoping that someone with pro experience would stop by.
So the key would to make sure my hai is completely dry, after the perm color but before I apply the demi.
As I also mentioned in my OP, can I use two different brands if necessary?
i.e.: Revlon Colorsilk for my roots and Clairol Natural Instincts for the rest.

@rosi red wrote:I am with you on this. I only do the roots and then I apply a heavy duty conditoner to the rest of my hair.
Also I shampoo immediately after coloring, apply Joico cuticle sealer, and them some conditoner that comes with the color kit.
My hair is totally healty.
ion Color Defense After-Color Sealer (from Sally Beauty) works well too, plus it's cheaper than Joico.

@ashleigh dupray wrote:@feline groovy i use a temp color in between demi root applications just to do the roots. there is no mixing, it is one bottle. ION Color Brilliance semi. Lt Warm Brown 305068. there are a few other shades if you need to mix and a clear gloss version too. if you don't wash every day you should get about 3 weeks. you can run through and refresh the color. 3 oz bottle gives many touch ups (about $5-6 at sally) if you do use the permanent color, pick up a packet of Care&Comfort it protects againt that scalp painful crawly feeling after. HTH
I've tried doing that, but demi and semi dye doesn't last on my grays, and they sure don't look like natural highlights against my darker brown LOL.
Although it sounds like it works well for your pretty light brown shade, and your hair must stay nice and healthy.
I wash my hair 2-3 times per week - every other day or every two days.
It helps my scalp and hair, plus the color lasts longer.
Thank you for your help. 8)

I have been using Age Beautiful Demi-permanent by Zotos that I buy at Sally's for about 4 years now. For me, it works great and lasts around 2 months or longer.
In its directions, it has exactly the info you are looking for! "For Root Touch using Age Beautiful Permanent and Age Beautiful DEMI together: Apply PERMANENT color to the roots/regrowth, after 10 minutes, Apply DEMI Permanent to the shaft of the hair through to the ends. Process TOGETHER for the last 20 minutes."
I'm sure the 2 types of color have to be mixed with their own kind of developer, but still cheaper than going to a salon.
Sally sales associates are generally very helpful and glad to spend the time to help you with questions. Also, Zotos customer service was very helpful when I called them too.
I hope this helps you in your search!
Interesting info, @TasMss - appreciate it. 8)

Feline Groovy, I have always found Excellence permanent haircolor by L'oreal to be a really long lasting hair dye. It isn't hard on the hair and it really covers gray the best of any hair dye I have ever tried. If you wanted to wash with a color enhancer once a week I found Aveda to make the best color enhancing shampoos. The shampoos and conditioners add just enough color to cover a few grays.
Don't be afraid of permanent color. As long as you don't overlap, it will leave your hair shiny, full of body and really pretty. I wish you luck in achieving exactly what you want....![]()

I tried and liked "Excellence" years ago, especially since they have an 'ash' shade that helped counteract the reddish/brassy tones my hair naturally pulls.
Thanks for the reccs and good thoughts. ![]()

@feline groovy wrote:Here's a new healthier method I was hoping to try:
1.
Apply permanent color to just my grays.
(the roots surrounding my face + on top of my head)
2.
Apply demi-permanent color to the rest.

Question #1:
Can I safely use two different brands?
(trying to keep my budget in check)
Question #2:
Can I actually apply one right after the other?
(do the roots first, then the rest)
------
I've searched online, but any advice or tips here would also be appreciated.
Thanks.
I use Sally's demi permanent hair color for my grays.
I get my hair highlighted at the salon, but in between I use demi permanent color for root touch ups. The last 5 minutes of timing I can pull through the color if I want.

@PinkyPetunia wrote:I don't think the 2 types of dyes are compatible and I would not use both at the same time. You can call the 1-800 phone number on the box of dye to make sure.
Just wondering why you'd want to use the 2 products at the same time. It seems to overly complicate the whole hair color process. I don't get what hair color has to do with health.
The color of one's hair has nothing to do with one's health.

@jaxs mom wrote:I'm not sure why you'd want to do this? When you say semi permanant are you actually meaning demi permanant like Natural Instincts? A true semi permanant is going to fade quickly and It's going to look odd having permanant on part of your hair and fading semi on another part. But maybe I'm not quite understaning what you're going for?
I think she wants to permantly cover gray roots and "refresh" the color in her hair. Yes you can do it. I have done it. First do your roots with permanent color then the next time you shampoo and when the hair is still damp use natural instincts all over, even the roots or you can just use natural Instincts by itself.
If you use a clarifying shampoo and no conditioner untill after you rinse the color out I find the natural instincts lasts much longer. When i use natrual instincts I "refresh my color every 14 shampoos even tho it lasts for 28 shampoos. I am trying to cover my gray while growing it out and natural instincts helps alot. I find that mygrey starts to faintly show after 14-20 shampoos depending on the types of shampoos i use
