Re: Hair Coloring/ Highlights Question

I used to do my own base color at home all the time then go in and get face framing highlights at the salon.  I never had a problem.

The only box color every stylist I ever went to told me to stay away from is Feria because it's more like a henna so trying to do anything over that is difficult and often doesn't work out.

Re: Hair Coloring/ Highlights Question

if you really want to continue getting highlights,  i would wait and have your hairstylist do the base color and highlight.   and its hard to do roots correctly in the back unless you have help (at least for me it is)

i have had some bad results using box color after a salon color service.   even if you have not colored for 6-8-10 weeks, you may go orange or muddy ash. the color may end up being very flat and hair looks coated. you could get hot roots.  i have had bad results with Clairol Perfect 10 and Garnier.  once i got mud, another time clown orange. i colored with these after salon color faded.

the #1 reason color fades is water.  shampoo less if possible.

Re: Hair Coloring/ Highlights Question

My salon has a sign asking that if your hair is color treated, permed or relaxed to PLEASE let your stylist know.  They cannot guarantee their products will be compatible.

Smart.

They also want to know for hair health reasons, especially if you have a combo of two of the above.

katiemichelle, what color is your natural color, how dark does your hair get using this shade?

My natural color was dark brown many moons ago.  With highlights it varies from light brown to dark brown.

I should have added that I sometimes do my own highlights after coloring my roots.  I have done the brush on and pulling through the cap (old school).  While I have mastered coloring my own roots with rat tail brush and bowl, I have not yet mastered doing my own foils for highlights.i
