Blushes, powders and lipsticks NEVER seem to get close to empty. But if I couldn't remember WHEN I bought them, they got tossed. Lipsticks do change in formulation and colors that once looked attractive can lose that special effect.
Foundations or products containing sunscreen - tossed.
Funny thing is: If you're a try beauty junkie, once you put your NEW products into circulation, you'll realize your MU drawer is just as full as ever.

I've started dating skincare products with the date that I opened them. I think I should do the same with makeup.

I am still using Tarte cheekstain since the very first airing about 10 years ago. BE too. As long as it's not liquid I use it.

I'm boxing up all of my new/sealed stuff (colors I won't wear-ever) and sending it to my daughter and her three roommates. They can have at it and donate what they don't want to their friends.

All I can think of is how little I used them and how much they cost me. In addition, I have nice new products that I am waiting to use until I use the old stuff up. Illogical, I know, because that means the new cosmetics are just aging daily themselves.
That's another reason to get rid of them. You don't need them making you feel badly whenever you open your drawer or see them on a counter. Keep the lesson - don't buy things you won't use very often - but lose the products.

Take all the old stuff, put it into a trash bag & take the trash bag out to the dumpster. Turn around, walk back in your home & don't look back. You'll feel better for it, though you're now about to launch the next phase of hoarding, not using, & buying new.

Blushes, lipsticks, gloss, mascara and eyeliners are easy for me to pitch. That gets old and doesn't apply the same way. Same with SPF which dates fast. Stuff I haven't used and know I won't I give to my grand girls who inherited my love for makeup. Old skincare that I'm not using gets trashed.
I don't feel guilty for buying new. I went 3 years on a makeup hiatus. I find myself using and buying my fave products- so less fickle than before. The last thing I was fickle about was the IT CC Cream. At first I raved it. I finally came to the conclusion while it gave a beautiful glow, the stuff is just not right for my skin. At least I know & only bought one tube at Ulta. I won't ever buy it again.

Plus I buy off of eBay if it's a tried and true product I've used over and over. Always from a reputable seller. Always like to save a buck and I HATE cosmetic counters! Even Ulta and Sephora have lost their luster. I like to research products, watch tutorials and don't NEED anything.. but it doesn't keep me from buying - like a Sleek Contour palette that Wayne Goss raved. That was off eBay and one I hadn't tried but am loving. Plus it wasn't expensive.
Do I sound boring or what? LOL

My granddaughter turned me on to an Elf blush that is to die for, plus the application is heaven with a stipple brush. It comes in a jar-with more product than I can use in a lifetime. So, at some point, even though I love it, it will get pitched. I'd put it right up there with Nars cream blushes- the ones with no shimmer.
When I went back to see what other colors they came in (so cheap, so why not buy another shade.. right?) they'd already been discontinued. That's fine because of the product size and I won't need to replace- it takes so little.
But I do hate it (don't we all) when they DC something that runs out fast and is gone without notice.
My point in all this drivel you ask? All in all I'm pretty loyal to what looks good on my complexion which cuts down on buying frivolously, which I've done plenty of in the past. THAT cuts down on what's in my makeup drawer. Although I do hang on to some things that don't take up much room. e.g. I just recently pulled out Laura Geller's Real Deal Concealer. I'm glad I did, as I reintroduced to it and it's working great.. allowing me not to wear a full face of CC cream or tinted moisturizer... just a light buff of Halo.
I'm sure I'll always have more than I actually need... I like to rotate and go back to various products that don't go bad for a long time.

I hear you & appreciate your regret. I hold on to things that work for me.. not stuff that is getting old and is easily replaceable.
Plus, what works for you in summer may not in winter.. variety is the spice of life IMO. I'm a Gemini. What can I say.
I feel for you, but little by little you can build it back up with products you love.
