No big deal, no special cap or hassle! I used Clairol Root Touch Up. Just randomly streaked it through my hair and it came out pretty nice! I usually do my roots in #5 (medium brown), and I chose #6.5A (light cool brown). Next time I'll go just a shade lighter.

Anyone else do their own highlights? And what do you use?

I've been doing my own highlights for many years. But my hair was a pixie with spikey on top. I'd just get the highlight kits with the cap, pull my hair through and I was done! It always turned out so professional looking! This past year I decided to let my super short hairstyle grow and now, since its longer, I go in to get my color done. Smile

Great! I did that a few times when I was still coloring my hair and I was amazed that it came out so good.

How did you pull the color through if not using a cap? Thanks for the tip.

How long is your hair? I have shoulder-length dark brown hair and also use Clariol Root Touch-Up in Medium Brown. I'm just wondering if there is really enough product to add highlights from the roots to the tip of longer hair??? I usually alternate the color I use between medium brown, medium golden brown, and light brown. In doing this, it gives color variations instead of all one color. Did you apply the color with the brush provided, or another method?

Thanks for the input.

Did you have any trouble with the back? Sounds like a great idea.

I actually didn't even know they had highlighter kits, I never saw them, or I may have tried that. All I did was brush on the color (not the brush that came with Roots), and I concentrated the color in those areas.

I just judged. t was easy to pick out a few spots in the back. But then I did see in a hand-held mirror. Since the shade difference was so subtle, it hardly mattered where I concentrated the color.

My hair is above shoulders, and yes, it was enough product. No, I don't care for the brush it comes with. I have another stiff brush I use.

Your idea of alternating similar shades for tonal coloring is perfect! Having all one color is a color faux pas to me! I don't know how when I color my roots, I do get shade gradation. The medium brown is really a bit lighter than my natural hair color, and I don't usually run the color through my hair at the rinse out.

But next time I do roots, I'll use two colors and use that lighter shade for my longer strands.
