@Mersha  Thank you so much and you are very welcome!

Whatever you decide about your hair color, something tells me you'll look great either way!

Re: For Those Ladies Choosing To Go Gray...

About 5 years ago I stopped lightening (to beige blonde) my hair, got a pixie and let it grow out to it's natural light brown with a bit of gray around the face.

Between the color change and haircut - most folks saw I did "something" ... but weren't sure what that "something" was.

I'm still mostly brown - with gray (turning white) around my face.

I still wear it short - a bit longer than a pixie. I'd never go back to the bother of coloring.

Re: For Those Ladies Choosing To Go Gray...

One thing I should have mentioned below ....

I use John Frieda shampoo and conditioner.

He has shampoo for blondes, brunettes and redheads.  It's only shampoo ... no commitment.

It doesn't "color" your hair - just sort of gives some dimension to the color.  I use both the brunettes ... Brilliant and Midnight.  The Brilliant tints the grey ever so slightly ,,, the Midnight just softens the grey a bit. Both "perk up" the brown hair.

Amazon carries all these and other Frieda products.  Good products.  (When I was a blonde ... I used his blonde shampoo.)

I will never have gray hair. I made that decision when I saw how back in the 30's films, the method of aging used was to give the character gray hair. Then the "Carol Burnett Show" they depicted aging by putting her in gray wigs. That did it for me. Even Vicki Lawrence looked years older in skits playing that character on "Mama's Family."

@Trinity11  Gen X and Gen Z are paying  big bucks to have their hair dyed grey, if you dress and act young its not aging. I personally think dark hair past 70 looks like people are trying to hard to hold on to something and they are just tricking themselves

And you would be INCORRECT. I know many people over 70 with dark hair, who are NOT trying too hard OR tricking themselves. They look a LOT younger than those who have grey hair, which is AGING.

@Mersha I loved my dark brown with red highlights. I loved the color of my hair, but it was just so fast that the grey roots would start to show. I would have to color every 4-5 weeks-3 hours & $110.

One day I went in (Fall 2019) to get it colored. I sat down & my stylist had her hair colored the prettiest grey shade.

I told her I was done. We were letting my hair go grey. I loved her. She put away the colors she had out & did lowlights.

It was fairly painless. I never cut my hair short. She just kept blending.

My husband had always encouraged me to quit coloring.

Do I look my age? Probably. It's 63.

Did I look my age with colored hair. Probably.

Do I think I look 20 years older? I do not look 83.

Did I look 20 years younger with my colored hair. That's funny!

The bigger change for me was letting my hair grow out. I have never, ever had longer hair. Always layers in some sort of bob.

My new stylist loves my grey color & we decided to try letting it grow longer. No layers.

It is very odd to me.

@Dusty1 you're post gives me hope!  Right now I'm tired of sitting for 2+ hours in the salon having mine colored.  It's been 2 months and I'm still on the fence about it so maybe highlights or lowlights will be the way to go until it grows out.  A very short, pixie style is not an option for me.
I'm going to be 70 this year.

Do I look my age, don't know.

Will going grey make me look older, don't care.

If I don't like it I can always go back.

Re: For Those Ladies Choosing To Go Gray...

I got super lucky in the grey hair department. I have past shoulder length hair and let mine grow out during the stay at home phase of our lives. It’s now all grey with enough darker pieces that give it dimension. I have been told it doesn’t age me and most people think I color it like this on purpose (so funny because at this point, I would never consider sitting in a chair for hours coloring it like I used to). The funnier thing is that I have gen Zs and Xs come up to me all the time and tell me they love my hair. They are incredulous when I tell them it’s all mine and I’m thinking yeah sweetie, I could be your grandmother 😆😂
I’m so glad I stopped coloring it, I kind of wish I had done it a decade ago. I would have saved a lot of salon money.

Re: For Those Ladies Choosing To Go Gray...

@CelticCrafter My stylist made it fairly painless.

My sister went grey before me, but she keeps her hair really short so it went fast for her.

I still do my makeup. no big changes.

I get my hair trimmed every 2 months.

It hurts my feelings a little bit when people say "Those women have given up."

"Those women don't care that they look 20 years older."

"Women who go grey don't take care of themselves like we that color our hair."

We are all just doing the best that we can.

Those unkind words usually come from a place of fear about growing older. It sounds like your hair looks lovely, and maybe you can post a photo!

Re: For Those Ladies Choosing To Go Gray...

I tried because I got so tired of keeping up with it. Not to mention it's so expensive!! But I have to admit it aged me and I felt depressed; it just looked bad. Not a pretty silver but a kinky white. I caved and went back and started getting my roots done again. It just makes me feel better. To each her own.

@monicakm   I wasn't embarrassed or felt bad about the comments regarding my grey hair.  I thought they were jerks and rude, speaking like me about me behind my back.  Did they think I could not hear them or were they trying to offend?  I said nothing, ignored them.

Lots of jerks in this world, and I live in it.
