@Trinity11 @San Antonio Gal With Vicki Lawrence, I think it was more the "style" of the gray hair, the way the character dressed, acted, even held her mouth (always kind of "pursed") than the gray color that made her appear old.

Might be , but, don't want to look it. ROFL
I've seen older women let that ol' long grey mess grow way long, then pigtail it, twist it up. Ugh !
Cut that mop off. Hot and heavy and nasty looking.
@SharkE While I have seen some gray-haired ladies with "unkempt" hair--long or short--a stylish cut can make all the difference. I do know a couple of ladies with mobility issues that make styling difficult, so they just clip their hair up, or ponytail it--much easier than trying to style even a short cut sometimes. Some ladies I know have short frizzy gray hair from years of perms--not stylish, but again, easy for them to manage. Not a single one of them look "nasty". As long as it's clean, it's all good!

At 62 I have not gone gray nor cut (other than trims) on my down to my backside hair. My hairdresser since 1996 colors, trims, and drys my hair in about an hour and 15 minutes every 8 weeks.
So no biggy on time wasted to me or on money since I pay her cash and I have always increased her amount myself. She as never asked for more money herself. Truly blessed with her and my hair. She is about 5 years older than me so if she retires then all bets are off on going gray and having extremely long hair.
My Mom did not stop until about 2 years before her death and it looked wonderful.

Morning! I started going gray about 15 years ago . My hair is salt and pepper Silver/white on the top and sides and dark brown everywhere else . I love it ! My husband wishes it would all go silver . My hairdresser also likes it much better the the highlights I used to get . I will be 61 in a few months . I don't think going gray necessarily makes you look older . I think a lot of factors go into it . Wearing a dated hairstyle ( regardless of the color ) . Wearing makeup trends or in a style you wore in your 20s and 30s . Lastly wearing clothes that don't fit properly .

I don't think it is the "going grey" that is the prob, but the care and style of one's hair.

Late to the party, but....
At 73, my hair is most likely almost fully gray...I have no idea and don't plan to find out any time soon.
I color at home because the salons always seem to make me too dark. I use a light brown and it's my natural color. To me, it still looks natural...maybe I'm going blind ![]()
I'm not trying to fool anyone that I'm still "young" so that's not the issue. However, I know my medium olive skin looks better with light brown hair.
If I HAD to go to the salon for color, I might let it go. Cannot stand to sit and wait for anything.
One thing I know for sure...I'm not ready to go gray, so I don't.
Let us know what you decide.

@MissRose722 wrote:@Mersha Count me as one of those ladies who decided to go gray. Premature gray hair ran on my mother's side, which I inherited. From age 25 to 61, I had my hair colored dark brown, then auburn as I got older. At 61, my natural roots were white and these roots were showing just two weeks after getting my hair colored, which was monthly. It was March 2020, the beginning of the pandemic, and with salons closed along with working from home, I decided to go natural. The photo below was taken in October 2020 (still look the same now, except my hair is a little longer).
Like many have said here, it's a matter of personal preference. For me, it was a very good decision as well as a practical one as my hair became increasingly resistant to hair color. The stigma of a woman with gray hair is no longer IMO especially with all the great hair care products and hairstyles available. Do what you feel is best for you!
Your natural hair color is beautiful. My grandmother had the same hair. It was a shiny white. It didn't have any silver or gray. I am hoping that I inherited the same hair.

@monicakm @San Antonio Gal @SloopJohnB @vermint @Witchy Woman @lgfan Thank you all so much for your sweet compliments as they are greatly appreciated! When I decided to go natural, I kept an open mind regarding people's reactions to my new look. I was pleasantly surprised to receive so many compliments from women as well as from men. The only dissenting opinion was from someone who felt that women should color their hair until age 90, then they should go natural after that age. Well, I politely disagreed to say the least. As a matter of fact, my Godmother lived to be 94, and her hair was a lovely light golden brown (courtesy of Garnier Nutrisse) ![]()
