This is something that I seldom do.  But I keep hearing and reading that it is the most important thing to do for your skin: face and body.

I'm ready to give it a go although it's probably too late at my age.

So, what do you use?   Mask?  Scrub?  Peel?  How often do you do it?

@Bridgegal  At first I use alba Botanica facial scrub which is gentle but now I own the Pop Sonic Leaflet which I purchased at QVC.  I use it for washing my face with a facial wash and it also exfoliates my skin.  The Leaflet is a great tool and reasonably priced.  One side is for washing and the other side for massaging.  I paid around $50 when they had a TSV but I still think they sell them.  You are never too old to take care of your skin.

I use something similar to the Pop Sonic, I got mine off eBay way before Q/Hsn sold them. I used to use the Clarasonic but I found they were too harsh, just my opinion.

Never too late for a girl who wants to improve her looks!

If you don't want to spend a fortune try Tree Hut scrubs for the body. Smell great like a spa day and less than $10. You can find them online or at Target. Add a good moisturizer after. I recently tried Gold Bond Ultimate Radiance Renewal in the tube. It's a heavy cream oil and coconut fragranced. They also make a lotion in a pump. Again, less than $10 at Target.

Face I use Ulta's brand scrubs in coconut followed by a good serum and moisturizer. Ulta has sales that bring the price down to about $6.

@redhead handbag queen  I agree that the Clarisonic is too harsh..... and may cause broken capillaries.  QVC is too expensive on the POP Sonic Cleansing device.  I also bought a silmilar one from Amazon and just last week they had the real Pop Sonic Leaflet in TJ Maxx for $10.00.  What a deal, I got 2 , one for a gift.

This is exactly why I stopped using the Clarisonic!

Re: Exfoliating

[ Edited ]

I use Retin-A (every other night) so that takes care of most of my exfoliating needs. But sometimes I get a little flaking and peeling so I use glycolic acid, in varying concentrations, on my nights off from the Retin-A. In the mornings I use a cotton muslin cloth to remove any dead skin and that's about it.

I have redness and a few broken caps so I stay away from scrub type products. Those seem to make the situation worse for me. Also never use hot water on my face, in the shower especially, when I cleanse or rinse my face...that exacerbates the redness really bad and the hot water only makes more of a dry skin situation worse also.

@Bridgegal  -- I've seen 3 derms in my lifetime, and 2 of them told me that exfoliating was one of the worst things we can do for our complexion.   I've used a terrycloth washcloth to wash my face since I was a kid -- one derm told me that was too abrasive.   Everyone will tell you something different.

That said.... I always use a washcloth, and I keep a tube of "gentle" apricot scrub in the shower.  I use the scrub about once every 2 weeks.

The dermatologist is the first person to see the negative effects of extreme exfoliation, such as microdermabrasion gone wrong but if used properly, I find it necessary.

I do have a rechargeable complexion brush, I don't use it daily, I find it can be too harsh.   I use it gently on a low speed.    I prefer a chemical.  I like Clinique clarifying lotion for dry skin.   It's very gentle & efficient & I can use it every day.

If you are looking at drug store type products, don't overlook the acne section.   Very gentle acne products can be a good exfoliater, for at least once a week.

When you exfoliate then you are removing your skin's natural acid mantle. When you do this then that makes your skin vulnerable to environmental factors such as dry air, bacteria and pollutants. So you don't want to exfoliate too often. It can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 15 hours for your acid mantle to restore, depending on how much of it was removed in the exfoliation process.
