Everyone has a natural exfoliating mechanism, but this slows as we age. Other things play a role...environment, diet, lifestyle....

If your skin is not looking as vibrant, if your skin feels rough or looks dull, does not feel smooth, if you are forming fine lines - it may be time to nudge the exfoliation process along, and you can do that, either chemically or physcially or both.

For myself, I like a daily, gentle exfoliation - face & body. Chemcially, for face, I use low percentages and a Clientele sponge, which is not rough at all, and use a Salux cloth for body brushing.

Look up gentle chemical exfoliants and you will see some of the things used: mandelic acid, lactic acid, fruit enzymes, etc.

I keep a Salux cloth in the shower for body and use a Konjac sponge for face.

Why glycolic wash do you use.  Over the counter or prescription? Brand and what does this do for your face?

I exfoliate every week. I can use anything, don't have a fav,  so am using up my stash of skincare. Need to mention that you should not think that the Clarisonic as an exfoliating tool--it is not!!! it is for cleansing. why people think it is for scrubbing the daylights out of your skin, I don't know!! Making and peeling are different. And it is not too late to work with your skin, just don't exfoliate all the time. and make sure you moisturize afterwards. But you never apply an exfoliator with a Clarisonic, ever !!!!!

I have sensitive skin with a ton of allergies and issues. I also started my skin care routine a little later than most. That said...I still see results. I use Dr.Denese Essential Lipid Treament Mask, Phliosoply microdelivery peel 2 piece system, Dr. Denese firming facial pads. The Dr.Denese firming facial pads are usually part of the suggested daily routine, Because I have sensitive skin, I use them 2-3 times a week only. For the true exfoliation product I alternate between the Philosophy microdelivery and Dr Denese Treament mask. Once I use up the Philosophy product then I will just use the Dr Denese Mask.

I think that it's never too late to start to take care of yourself. Set your budget and decide which product fits. Keep in mind your skin type and condition. I have dry/combination skin so I don't facial as often as is recommened. I'll do a facial once every other week but I'll use the Dr Denese firming pads twice a week.

Hope one os these work for you.

This is something that I seldom do.  But I keep hearing and reading that it is the most important thing to do for your skin: face and body.

I'm ready to give it a go although it's probably too late at my age.

So, what do you use?   Mask?  Scrub?  Peel?  How often do you do it?

@Bridgegal   If you’ve never exfoliated your skin, the most important thing is to start out gently and not too often. As your skin adjusts, you can advance to stronger products. I find a chemical exfoliant (believe it or not) like Peter Thomas Roth Acid Peel Pads, or any others advertised as gentle enough for every day, more gentle than manual scrubs.

@wagirl   I agree that Clarisonic is for cleansing not exfoliating. I never understood why it’s demonstrated on a face full of makeup. Why grind makeup into your pores? I use my cleanser first w/ wash cloth to remove makeup and then use my Clarisonic to deep clean pores.

Warning:  I found out the hard way what was causing my rosacea.  Exfoliating.  Any kind.  Chemical, manual, even using a washcloth on my face can cause redness that lasts at least a day. Consistent use can cause broken capillaries.

My skin looks great without exfoliating.

Don't believe everything you read.

@BridgegalAs we age our skin thins so less exfoliation is best or broken caps, will come your way. imo. I use a gentle exfoliater by Thatcha but only once or sometimes twice a wk. "Tatcha The Rice Polish Gentle" Yes, its expensive but it lasts a long time as you need a very small amount. You should check out a video on the Q. or youtube. I don't use wash cloths or any type of tools but only my hands. I don't have sensitive skin but I use hydrating products for my normal/dry skin. You are never too old to improve your skincare!
