Help.  My once "oily" skin has turned so dry, it just peels like a bad sunburn.  I don't know if it might be from some medications I am taking, or just age creeping up.

Can anyone recommend a moisturizer (OTC) that I can try.  I have been using Nivea (love, love, love it) but have been told it's really not the right thing for my skin.

Any help would be appreciated, even IF someone says "Nivea"..... I brought back a large jar from Mexico and really hate to hang it up just yet but if it's not the right thing, I guess I will do it.

TIA

@sophiamarie

For drugstore creams, you can't beat Eucerin in the tub.  There is a generic version too, at Wal-Mart, under the Equate brand.

I have extremely dry skin after being on Accutaine for cystic acne about ten years ago.  I asked and a lot of nurses replied because I was experiencing extreme dermititus on my hands after preparing big meals and all winter.  They told me to use Curel hand cream and I did with great relief.  Not only does it look better but my skin doesn't hurt and burn!

@lolakimono  Oh, thank you so much.  THAT was the name I couldn't remember.  I used to use Eucerin - then started on Nivea.  At the time though, I had good skin, not oily or dry and I used it every night at bed-time.  I thought it was keeping my skin nice and smooth.  (Maybe it was)...... But, thanks again.  I will buy it at Walgreens tomorrow.

@sophiamarie Can you tell us what else you're putting on your face?  It might be that you're allergic to your cleanser or something else.

Without knowing your history, I will take a shot in the dark and recommend that you do some gentle exfoliation for starters.  I was going to recommend the new Skinn Rose Noir Balm.  It's really great.  But since you're only looking for OTC, I'd look for something that's more emoilient than creamy or lotion like.  If you like your Nivea, maybe you can keep using it, but add a good facial oil to it.  Again, a Skinn product, but many people like the Lipid Infusion Oil.  You can find it on eBay for a decent price and get it pretty quickly in the mail.

When I was having an issue with really dry skin, Curel was the best. I tried everything!

Re: Dry skin advice

[ Edited ]

I have had dry skin all my life - even as a teen. never a pimple. Now, post menopausal skin is so dry plus itchy and flaky. My routine for this is -- first bathe in a bath with Avon Skin so Soft every AM, followed by slathering myself down with skin so soft lotion.Chapstick on the lips if not going out - lipstick if i am. In the evening wash off MU and then use argon oil on face and even a little in my hair.When i put on MU I use 2 drops only of argon oil then spackle then my MU. I think the Spackle keeps the oil on my face so it doesn't dry out.I have dry skin from head to toe so I need to follow my routine over whole body every day. Some other lotions I find to be very good but not too thick are Eucerin creme and Alpha Keri creme. Since i use lotion head to toe I need to buy ones that are not horribly pricey as I go through them pretty fast.I have a friend who makes her own lotions and sometimes gives me one which I always appreciate.  i would love to try JM argon oil whipped butters but they are too expensive for me. I would go through one of those tubs every couple weeks.

A very informative post. Glad you asked this question. Was facing a similar problem myself and got some great tips.

I've also read that getting enough essential fatty acids helps with dry skin - eating things like salmon, etc.

nothing works better for me than oil of olay. I use the Oil of olay regenerist serum both day and night which is moisturizing by itself. For daytime over that I use the oil of olay total effects 7 and for night time over the serum I use the oil of olay microsculpture cream in the red jar.

Between these 3 things my skin is great. I have or had super dry skin and these 3 do the trick for me not only with moisturizing but also helping fine lines/wrinkles and texture.
