If I ask for a sample the associate fills my request while I am standing there...I think it's a great service.....

I like the samples, works for me.

I like the sample system at Sephora too. It's great to be able to get a sample of anything at all. As momtodogs said, the associate prepares your sample while you watch. Works for me also.

The OP says that she didn't ask for these samples, they were just put in her bag at checkout. I love Sephora, but that DOES seem a little strange. Maybe it was a mistake and they were meant for another customer. I have received many prepacked samples from the manufacturer thrown in my bag unasked for at checkout but the only time I have ever received a small clear tub that was in a handwritten cardboard thingy were times I was working with a SA and being offered to try or or asking about trying a new product. It was always packaged right before me and using a new applicator and very clean techniques (I'm a nurse, it was always done with the kind of care we use for dressing changes). I believe on one occasion when the SA had generously offered up a few products for me to try, she held them up at the register for me while I continued to shop around. Hopefully, this is what happened with you and another SA just threw them in the wrong customers bag. Maybe??

My Sephora will throw in those pre-made plastic containers at the register. Based on what I'm buying they'll say I'll give you some of this to try, too. They're the same containers that they use to make you up a sample when you ask for a specific thing to sample.

The only time I received samples like this is when I asked for it or if I was looking at a product and they suggested it. They never put one in my bag without asking unless it was a prepackaged sample. I like it for when they do not have a sample that is prepackaged.

How is this unsanitary? Did they empty the contents from a bigger bottle into a smaller random bottle?

I've gotten a perfume sample and a lip product sample that way before.

I have received samples from Sephora exactly as the OP describes, but only when I specifically ask for a sample to try out. I have never just had store associates just randomly throw samples in my bag without request.
I do like receiving the samples, especially the eye cream and serums. It's a great way to test out some usually very expensive products before making a purchase.
