I've been loving my curly hair this past year since doing the Curly Girl Method by Lorraine Massey. I foolishly tried a new shampoo/conditioner/gel on my hair that was natural, but not the Deva-Curl products. My hair turned to complete MUSH. It was so soft, it felt like spun silk and NOT in a good way! I know I have over-conditioned it and now what? Went back to my usual DevaCurl products this morning, but it still feels so weird and mushy. HELP!

I have done that before and know what you mean about being to soft. Actually i have foolishly done this more than once.
For me i had to wash my hair out with a clarifing shampoo or at least a reg. shampoo and start over.
I don't know about you but after a while i had to back off from the styling products(angell)
I now have really good results with AG Recoil

The "Curly Girl" method was started by Lorraine Massey and she has written 2 books on it. Basically it involved caring for your curly hair with products that do not contain parabens, silicones, or sulfates. She started a line of products "DevaCurl/DevaCare" as well. It also involves co-washing (washing hair with conditioner versus sudsy shampoos), but I use the "Low Poo" 3x/week. If you have curly hair, I highly recommend her book! It has really changed my life and especially my hair!

A friend told me I needed to use a protein treatment to get my hair back to normal. I've never used one before.

I love the curly hair method. I use Deva products. One time I used the no poo, then left the moisture pack on for 15, rinsed and then used the one conditioning. My hair was really flat. Arg! After all that work. The best hint I use that made a difference (besides the actual products) is the mico fabric towel. And hand squeezing the water out. Works like a charm, without the frizz!

I have a micro towel for the hair (different brand), and I do love it.
I do a modified curly girl: I do use shampoo but only ones that are sulfate free, and I have sworn off any products with cones or even with polyquats (which can be just as gunky).
Naturallycurly.com is a wonderful site for information and advice. And there are many, many great product lines from which to choose.
I personally like Curl Junkie and SheaMoisture for shampoo, conditioners, and styling products.

OP, you might do the lemon rinse that is in the Curly Girls book. I think (without pulling out my copy) that you add a good bit of lemon juice to the No-Poo or whichever Co-wash you're using. That is a good clarifier.

I didn't buy the Deva towel. They are very small, and a little pricey. Don't tell anyone, but I bought 12 microfiber towels at Costco, made for car polishing, LOL! They were about 8 bucks for the dozen. They work well. I also have a microfiber towel I bought at Marshall's! They really make a difference for me
