@rnmom wrote:@geezerette - if my husband weren't here there is absolutely NO way I would stay on this property all by myself. NO way. You're a better woman than me. Even something as simple as clearing the driveway when it snows is a hassle. It's so long that we have to plow it with a plow that's attached to a quad, we don't even snow blow it, let alone shovel it. Plus, hubby is the one that wanted this place, not me. I was perfectly happy in a subdivision. To him, subdivision is a swear word.
The dogs absolutely love it here, but I wouldn't stay for them. Probably not for the boys either. Unless they were big enough and old enough to take on most of the work and they REALLY wanted to stay. But by myself? Nope, would never happen.
BH mentioned Missouri again last night. The last time I was outside NM was in 2006 when we took that road trip to Kansas and Missouri with our previous dog and with the intention of moving to the Kansas City area.
I thought we had agreed that the humidity and tornado activity put the kibosh on that for us, but now he's dropping the M-word again.
The saga continues.

Since I'm in this thrifty phase, I'm thinking about cutting ties with the person who has been cutting my hair and going to a chain salon instead.
I risk getting a bad cut but I haven't been happy with the ones I've been getting and then I get angry at myself for paying so much for them and handing over a big tip.
I figure I could go to someone else who ignores whatever I have to say about the cut I want but charges less for it.
Truth be told, I'm tempted to go to an old-school barber.
So many threads on this forum about unhappy experiences with salons. I'm not that picky -- I've lived with mediocre cuts all my life -- but my hair still grows fast and maintaining a short cut requires a considerable investment of time and money.
It's bizarre. My mother cut my hair for years and I cut my sister's. With better results!
I just want a basic short cut.
We have Supercuts, Great Clips, MasterCuts, Fantastic Sam's and Style America. Oh -- and Ulta.

You’re so right on everything. It’s a lot of work and a lot of money to maintain. The long driveway is one of my headaches too. Thankfully, snow is not a problem here, although I did leave some snow/ice melt down by the road all winter in case I needed to get out. This year we didn’t have any freezing precip to worry about, though.
It was fine when the Old Geezer was well enough and strong enough to deal with it all. He loved it. Much like your husband, he hated subdivisions. And while he enjoyed the amenities of a city, he hated living in them. That’s one of the biggest reasons we moved so much.
I’m staying here for the dog. The town I plan to move to has such tough restrictions on keeping Rottweilers within the city limits that I would be hard put to take Carla there. But I have to admit truthfully, while this place is a giant pain and a financial drain, I will miss it when I leave. The peace, no neighbors, birds and critters. Whenever I live in a city around people I get stressed. I guess I’m antisocial!
But things change, and you gotta roll with the punches. 🥊🙂

I'm looking forward to the No Name apples this year and I hope I like them as much as I did last year. It's been fun trying so many new varieties at Natural Grocers and I may even continue to pick up apples there, but the No Name was a game changer.
Do you have dependable growers markets in your area?
In a word: no.

Ours are somewhat limited mainly because there's not a lot growing in the desert. If they could figure out a way to make tumbleweeds edible I'd never have to shop for groceries again.
In a way it's good that selection is limited. We don't run the risk of buying too much only to watch it rot. But there's plenty there -- other than produce.
And they still allow canine browsers. ![]()

What's with men and subdivisions?
BH hates our neighborhood and our neighbors. We do have one neighbor we like because our dog absolutely adores him.
Why didn't I know this about BH before we went house-shopping? I think I liked it better when he smoked tobacco because he smoked outside. That meant he actually went into the yard. Since he started vaping he hasn't been out there.
I dragged him out last week and that's probably why he's talking about Missouri again.

I don't like these bans on dogs. I'd rather just ban the owners. I was always sympathetic towards pit bulls because my mother brought home an Am Staff one day. Actually, she brought home two, but we made her bring one back. This is the same woman who brought home a raccoon.
Anyway, I have to admit my opinion has changed a little since a neighborhood pit bull put BH in the ER a few years ago. There was so much blood that they took him in right away -- just to see if he had lost an eye.
Yeah, it was an unpleasant experience but these dog bans tend to include "aggressive" breeds like... Boxers? Boxers???
I just wish people would put a little more energy into raising their dogs and their children. Why can't they be more like @rnmom ?

That’s pretty much what’s happened to me too. Nobody sent to the ER, but my opinion has changed a bit since having Carla. I still think the people are the problem and I’m against a breed ban, but I don’t think vicious dog rules are a bad thing.
First, Carla is big and very scary looking, even though she’s a sissy at heart. If I didn’t know her and just saw her on the street, I’d give her a wide berth. But she’ll come out barking and stiff legged to greet a stranger, and when she gets on the other end of a broom (her arch nemesis), she just won’t give up the fight. So I can now understand why, when confronted with a strange dog—specifically a Rottweiler—that police or animal control will shoot first and ask questions later. You just can’t take that risk. And she may be the sweetest dog on earth to me or someone she knows, but she isn’t going to be that way with a stranger wanting to corner her.
Like her vet. 😳🤕

Apparently it’s in their DNA.
My OG chewed tobacco. He said before we moved here that he never again wanted to live in a place where he couldn’t spit or pee in his front yard.
’Nuff said. 🤗

As much as I hate the thought of life without a dog, I sometimes wonder if life without worrying about the dog, other dogs, other people and legislation would make it less awful. ![]()
