Okay -- here's the deal. It's spring and we're halfway through April. This is the challenge: Each of you has to do something new, different and fun. Then you have to report on it here.

We have two weeks to find something new to do!

I did do something different last night, but I'll save that in case I do nothing new or different over the next two weeks. But I really want to top that. So I'm keeping my eyes open for opportunities.

Ready... steady... GO!

What to do. What to do.

I did find one at Walmart, but, sheesh, was it flimsy so I didn't get it. Not that I need a fancy dispenser but maybe one that when I hold it, it doesn't fold like a cheap umbrella. So, I put it on the list. Today, I needed something from under my bathroom cabinet and started pulling things out and what do you know, I found a new hair color dispenser that I could use. Then, I wanted to buy a spray bottle because I want to make a mister, no, not a man, a refreshing spray, so what do I find an empty bottle from Jonathan Products, remember him, that I will clean and use. So, all that to say, we buy and save these things for when we need them, but then, when we need them we go and buy them again. So, I didn't add to the clutter in my cabinet or my to do list. moral of this long story, look before you buy.

What happened to Jonathan? He had a TV show and a line of hair care products. Then, suddenly, he was gone.

I'm glad you found what you needed right at home.

Several items had gone bad from disuse such as a suitcase that got moldy. So sad that items were kept to be used someday when the item in current use goes bad, and now both are bad. Oh well. Lessons learned. I now have a better understanding about Marie Kondo's attitude of joy and life/spark in items. I hope the things I put in the donate pile will be used and bring joy to someone. If nothing else those donating organizations employ people who have difficulties getting other jobs.

Those flashlight/radios were popular in 1999. That was when there was so much uncertainty about computers being able to handle the year 2000. Yes, we bought one, and we have since upgraded to one that can charge a cell phone. {#emotions_dlg.blush}{#emotions_dlg.lol}{#emotions_dlg.blink}{#emotions_dlg.rolleyes}

Well I'm starting something different very soon. It's called RETIREMENT! This is totally unexpected! I've worked as an RN for the same employer for 35 years. They have eliminated my position and are sending me out the door with a severance package in addition to my small pension. I guess they think that 69 is too old. I want to be excited about my freedom but I am also worried as my finances were messed up by a divorce a few years ago.

After a couple of months of rest, I'll probably have to look for a small part-time job to supplement my retirement. I would say Wal-Mart but they are laying off.

It's a good thing that I have been on a "no buy" plan for several months so no credit card debt to deal with.

I'll continue to downsize my stuff in case I have to move.

I agree! And I certainly hope no one is ever hurt or offended by another poster's comments here. Sometimes things can be misinterpreted, of course, but there are also instances of online butchery that make this correspondence challenging. I won't mention names (Viewpoints! Gamers!), but I ended my staycation last night by receiving a nastygram on Gamers. Seriously? Well, that certainly takes all the fun out of something that should be... uh, a GAME. I was actually having some FUN there this week and now I think I'll just sit the games out for a bit. I'm not even sure why someone would get worked up over an answer from a poster since these games move so quickly -- what harm is done if someone misreads the rules for a particular game and posts something that doesn't quite meet qualifications? Speed is the thing there and that's what makes it fun. Or should I say "made?"

As I said, I hope this is a safe and pleasant environment for everyone who visits. I would hope that if anyone felt otherwise she would alert the rest of us. Why come here if you're going to be battered?

It makes a person just want to sit and watch the birds. (Truth be told, even they bicker. I think that one eaglet is a sociopath. Is this Cain/Abel Syndrome? Even the baby hawks attack each other. In each nest there is a baby bird with a short fuse and one who just takes it. Odd.)

Interesting! Are you in the position to relocate? I work with a nurse who is 80. In fact, today I was at a psych nurse conference and was amazed that I felt, at 55, like a youngster. One of the nurses I really like is 67. I had no idea she was 67 because she just seems so perky. I’ve never seen her without a big smile. She's working on her BSN and working full-time. The 80 year-old was there today and she looked fabulous in a peacock blue jacket. There were some seasoned nurses there and that impressed me.

It sounds like your hospital is less concerned with your age but may be more concerned with your salary and benefits. When I was 40 I had to leave a company with -- ironically -- several others who were 40. We were at the point where we were making a decent wage and had good benefits and had accrued many hours of sick and vacation time. Time to let us go and replace us with younger, lower paid people. That was the high-tech arena.

Hospitals are similar in that they are always looking for ways to save money -- well, where staff is concerned, anyway. Benefits are dwindling (ours are awful!) and salaries have been slashed for new hires. Some of us did get a bump this year after years of zero increases. I'm relatively new so I may be a bargain.

Have you thought about working as a nurse in another hospital? A clinic? A nursing home? In hospice? Maybe work as a case manager?

The pressure is on many nurses now to get advanced degrees. When I was a tech I felt bad for nurses with ADN/ASNs who had decades of experience but were now being asked to go back to school and get a BSN when they were trying to figure out how they were going to pay for their kids' degrees. I'm getting my BSN because if I get canned tomorrow (always a possibility, I tell ya) I'll need a BSN to get hired at just about any other hospital.

A lot of nurses are looking at early retirement or a career change because they just don't want to go back to school. I start a new, overpriced course on Monday. I can't say I blame them.

Just Bee-

You are right. It is more about salary and benefits. Mine have been excellent, top notch, and they are tired of paying it. They will continue to pay until the end of August.

I do have a BSN and I'm an AHA CPR instructor. I'm sure I'll find some type of part-time work. I have a girlfriend who has a doctorate in nursing and she has lots of ideas and connections. Interesting about the nurse who was 80.

No one knew her age until she went to the ER for an injury. Someone on the unit opened her chart and told everyone her age. We lose so many staff members just for that. Don't open charts unless the person is your patient! (Trips 'em up every time.)

Sounds like you're in pretty good shape with lots of options. This could be a good thing.
