Re: ComPact 2014 – February

We ran out of Milk Bone dog treats for my doggie so I googled some recipes. I found an easy, no-bake recipe consisting of only peanut butter, cinnamon, oatmeal and water, which I had at home. He loves it and I didn't have to spend anything extra for it! I love knowing all the ingredients that went into it, instead of preservatives. I'm now DIYing my facial cleanser, toner and moisturizer and doggie treats. The ComPact started in my bathroom and is spreading to other areas of the house. Now I should get started on my ORC...{#emotions_dlg.blush}

Just popping in to say, this thread saved me from 2 skincare purchases today. It really does help this "use what you have first" before purchasing mantra. I don't need skincare right now so it would of just been sitting on a shelf for a very long time. Thank you thank you. I really appreciate all of you and what we are doing here.

Re: ComPact 2014 – February

Dperry, I do know what you mean. I hate finding a new product that looks great, but can't try it because I have a big supply of something else to use up first. I sure feel silly owning up to that, but it's the truth.

Well, everyone, I am now down to a reasonable amount of "inventory," and all of it is my next one of something I'm actively using. The exception is Wen, which I love but it was my first autodelivery; I overdid it and have enough for at least a year. Maybe more. I guess I got greedy, huh? Won't do that again.

The only things I've bought this month are two spare mascaras, which I got at a twofer price. I didn't use mascara until I got a sample size from PTR, and found it actually works for me. So I don't feel bad at all about buying more. All my spare items fit in one small spot, about a foot square, and I've promised myself I won't buy anything that doesn't fit in that space. That said, I confess I have more than one kind of serum and moisturizer and cream in active use. So I will keep using them until I'm down to one of each. Maybe two. The variety is good for me, right?

I was ruthless with my linen closet recently. I'm down to a few towels and sheets and blankets now. It still takes up quite a bit of space but I've lost that overstuffed feeling about that closet now. (I have a rather overstuffed feeling about my garage, where the donation bags are waiting for me to haul them away. But the garage is another story. I need a special garage Compact. Maybe an intervention...)

And I still have some small caches of items that exceed my needs. All my hand and nail products are in a single tray, but I have 14 emery boards. Who needs 14 emery boards, all half-used? I guess I was mindlessly buying them every time I was in that store. Probably a lifetime supply.

I think of you all when I use something up, and it makes me very happy and pleased with myself when I see the empty container! See you all in March!

Ah, the beauty of the wish list!

I was reading some more of these posts, and I feel the urge to praise the glorious wish list. When I find something I want, on the wish list it goes. If it's in a catalog or magazine, the page gets folded down. From time to time, I delete items online and tear out the pages and toss the catalogs, and then i toss most of the pages. I still have a file with a bunch of pages of things and ideas I really like. I don't have to give them up. I also don't have to buy them.

The best thing about putting something on a wish list is that I get to dismiss it from my mind. There it is, waiting for me, whenever I want to look at it again. Meanwhile, I can enjoy wanting it, admire my wonderful taste in liking it, and not spend a dime. And I can actually get it when I choose to. But over time, most of the things I thought were so splendid turn into "nice" and then "meh."

I have found that after a few weeks or months, I end up purchasing very little from my wish list. The urge for it has passed or I found a better alternative. Sometimes, I've added something to my wish list only to find it was already listed but that is rare.

I went to the city today to have my nails done, had lunch with a friend and then went window shopping at Lowes. Total expenditure today was $45+. At the end of five weeks in this year, I still have not made any non-essential purchases.

I'm tired of working on the kitchen; I think I'll tackle the bathroom now.

Re: ComPact 2014 – February

So sorry,

Jumping in and have not read thread.

Been very sick and very bad weather here but I got the new medicine I needed and am okay now, until I die of very old age!

I can meditate for the first time since the late 90's which is important to me.

I have been trying to tell this to my docs but none of them knew enough to answer and it happened naturally when an old drug got out of my system (a very real miracle!).

Glycerine, is becoming a key ingredient in my skin care along with RHSO and hope to be off mixed modern stuff for summer (with a physical SPF block) but with another winter like this will still need fancy mixed chemicals stuff like philosophy MW line.

I was sick and so is our weather and I had to fix my computer (did it myself, dad was engineer and ex-not so DH was programmer, learned enough from them so I could do it myself so far!)

Just bee, you are a gift in my life.

I have learned so much from you by your example,

a

Lots of love to all on this path.

KAY SD, I have a wish list too. I love Clinique and I saw the new cheek pops blushes that they just came out with. Oh, I want the plum one! But, friends, I am holding fast and just putting on my wish list--where it will stay until spring and I allow a couple of new makeup items such as a blush and lipgloss. But the temptation is so so so very hard it hurts! eek!

I will give another vote for no more super sizes, especially Philosophy ones. I get so bored with them. My exception would be Dr. DENESE. I do love her HYDROSHIELD and her day cream which I use everyday as my foundation. I wish TOVA would have larger sizes as I love her creams and shower gel.

Aw, gee! Your kindness is always appreciated here, annacat. And it's so good to "hear" things are going better. I might just have to steal that meditation idea!

just bee - Hope things improve with the work situation.

I've just been catching up on the thread and getting lots of insight from our fellow compacters. I haven't really been doing great with the One Room Challenge this month. We have been doing a general de-clutter around the house, so while my ORC is suffering, the ove, r all house feel is improved.

I'm trying to imagine myself as a steam roller gradually building up momentum and then making a huge effect. I wouldn't normally want to be a steam roller, but this is my clutter we're talking about!!{#emotions_dlg.scared}

My one room emphasis has somewhat cooled off. I keep remembering an organizer's comment that when going through a room if one should spot something out of place or might need discarding, take care of it at that moment. It is all the little things that add up, so perhaps if we can't focus upon only one room then we can do what we can throughout the house. That in itself might make it easier later to focus upon one room.

This has been my experience Konakat. Last year I attacked anything that moved me that day. I was all over the place but now I feel I can really take one room at a time. I still have been a little all over the place up until now but will start to focus. For February, I was going to do my bedroom but changed it to paperwork. I can only do paperwork for so long before it starts to get on my nerves so it will take me a minute to get through. Although I guess I am doing my bedroom at the same time. I have another box of things to donate so I will take it to goodwill tomorrow.

I am looking forward to living this year clutter free or maybe just a little lighter. Lol But while I still have a ways to go, it feels like I am getting closer to the way I want things to be.

It's good to hear that I'm not alone in my room slow down.{#emotions_dlg.blushing} Our bedroom is a bit messier due to the over all house cleaning, so I guess I'll be working toward my closet instead of diving right into it.

Though I did go through some paperwork Friday and found a recipe that was printed out and never tried. I tried it that night - less procrastination could be a recurring resolution for me, so this was big. Everyone in the family loved the recipe, so it goes in my tried and true cookbook (a notebook where I keep my "keeper" recipes). Plus it is now one less unfinished thing out there.{#emotions_dlg.thumbup}
