re: THINGS -

Things don't make me happy. Some things - the right things - make my life easier. Having the right number of things gives me added variety & options.

Having too many things creations clutter & overwhelms me when it comes to choosing what to use or wear. Having too many things makes my life harder & more stressful. My life is plenty stressful without my adding to it with things.

Well said. I believe you speak for many of us here. Better-half could live in one room as long as there was a computer, a place to sit, a place to sleep, and access to food and something that stores/cooks food. Oh, and a bathroom would probably be nice.

He detests decorations and knickknacks. (He has actually "come around" and has stopped complaining bitterly about the ancient wreath I place on the front door during the Christmas season.) As far as he's concerned, walls could be bare, without art. Curio cabinets? Never. He sees possessions as something one has to dust. Hates any form of decor in the kitchen because it's just a dirt/grease catcher. Hates cabinets because they're just a place to store unnecessary objects. Hates flat surfaces like counters because they're just another place for unnecessary items. Doesn't understand why someone would use a kitchen towel that has a design on it. Will clean the floor with a kitchen towel because it's a towel. Why is a towel specific to any room or purpose?

I like bookshelves. He doesn't see the point of keeping a book after it's been read. Cookbooks? Why, when there are recipes online? TV? Why? If you want to watch something you can find it on the computer. Why have DVDs? Once he watches a film he never wants to see it again.

He would be happy in a loft that is just one room without cabinets, shelves, closets. Just one space -- a box -- with one desk and something to sleep on. In fact, he could probably just sleep on the floor.

Amazingly, we have been together 23 years.

I think in a way similar to your DH. I am working on getting my life to reflect that.

I do not like knick knacks because they mean extra cleaning. I hate cleaning! lol.. I have two framed photos of relatives displayed. The rest are in a box (one of the ones waiting for me to go through). Several years ago I got rid of all my novels. I no longer buy them. I get them free for my Kindle or from the library or borrow from a friend. The only books I buy are health/reference books that I use over & over again. I have a small bookcase to keep them in & it is not full.

I have a few - very very - cookbooks. I got rid of them with the novels. I did not use them. I do admit to having many Kindle cookbooks but at least they don't collect dust! I rarely use recipes & tend to Google when I want one rather than look in a book I already have. Google is faster.

It is hard to stop thinking that I might need something sometime or that I might want it, etc. Finally accepting that I don't need things that have not been used in 6 months - one year was hard. I finally laid down the law & got rid of a lot of things and this year will do more of the same. A few things will get the "3 months to use it or it is gone!" rule.

With the help of the ORC I am going to end up living closer to the way I think & want to be. I want everything to have a place & I want to know exactly what I have and where it is. That will make everyday life easier.

Sounds great! Give me your address and I'll pass it on to Better-half! (He's actually not bad: Sparkling blue eyes, likes dogs, he's smart, has a devilish sense of humor, likes to shave his head. No trips to the salon for this guy!)

Oh! And he cooks!

lol... Bee, a man who cooks would be my dream come true! He sounds like a real keeper!

I think it is probably good that you are different in how you think. Obviously you must learn from each other & have that all-important understanding & balance. I don't suppose he has a single twin brother? {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

That's funny! My sister met his brother once and then asked: Why aren't you dating him? Polar opposites, those two.

His brother is extremely religious; Better-half is an atheist, recently turned agnostic. His brother feels he must rescue every damsel in distress; Better-half advocates independence and self-reliance. Has no interest whatsoever in needy, "glommy" women. Brother loves kids. Better-half doesn't want to be in the same room with a kid.

Can you prove that it was me who said I would start with my office? Ok, I know it was me, but I am a Pack Rat! I'll bet I still have papers since the 80s. Please don't make me go in there! LOL

I have bank statements, cancelled checks, school papers, and greeting cards from the 70s. I win.

When I decided to get my bank statement situation under control, I grabbed all of my old bank statements and put them next to the shredder. Whenever I walked by them, I would shred at least one bank statement. Mine dated back to the 70's, so I couldn't shred them all at once because I was afraid that my shredder would burn out. It took some time, but now I only have bank statements for the past seven years.

Also, I'm going to throw out things that in horrid shape that I still wear at home. I have enough "good" clothes to replace the poor stuff. Why should I look horrid at home?

I used to work with a woman who said she always looked nice at home. She did this because her husband worked with several women, and she did not want him to come home and see her looking like a mess. Over the years, I have thought about this statement frequently. I still cannot decide how I feel about it.

I am hunting for more ways to organize my makeup & skincare. I already have several thick glass jelly jar-type glasses for lipsticks, glosses, single end brushes, etc. What do you think of these ideas? I'm going to set up a makeup at one end of a table (computer set up on other end) for now, then move to a vanity or small desk when I find one.

QVC - K39783 -Genius Spice-It-Up Set of 2 Swiveling Spice Racks

These would be for small items like nail polish & some lotions. I'd like some for spices, too! $24.98 for two & they even have green & purple - my favorite colors! Have not checked enough to know if they can be found elsewhere yet.

Genius Spice-It-Up Set of 2 Swiveling Spice Racks

BB&B - Copco Non-Skid 15-Inch Cabinet Organizer

I like this idea for things a bit larger. Having little shelves would make t easier to locate things. Not sure if this would work for my little BE jars, but it probably would.

Each shelf measures approximately 15" W x 3" D & costs $7.99. I could purchase w/25% off coupon.

I love the purple spice rack. That is a great idea for makeup. Have you looked at Target.com? They have some spice containers that might work for the BE jars. Also, someone posted a picture of this makeup container recently. It's nice. V32389

Re: ComPact 2014 – February

Hey, everyone. I'm just catching up on the thread and really enjoying reading the posts. We're all working on getting to approximately the same place, and it is nice to know I have company. The snow has sidetracked me once again, but everything is cleared now, and I'm going to spend part of the evening tacking those boxes and that closet again. I also need to squeeze in my workout, and then husband and I are going to watch an old James Bond movie. The whisper knits that I planned to order at the end of January arrived today, and I am releasing six things from the closet in exchange for the two sweaters.

I am steadily working through the beauty products stash, and got lipsticks and nail polish inventoried. I need to start polishing my nails again................................

I hit pan on a blush! *doing happy dance* Should finish this year, LOL!

Didn't get so far with the room this weekend--was going to start but it became cold and grey and made DH and I lazy! Will work a bit tomorrow on the dresser.

Neither did I. On Saturday night, I washed some clothes and sewed a button on a blouse. Then, I decided to work on my ORC - the master bedroom. To keep me company, I turned on the TV. Well, guess who was on? Jimmy Fallon! Jimmy Fallon, AGAIN! This time it was the best of Late Night. Nothing got done in the room. I blame Jimmy.
