Just my thoughts.
Just as a fyi, law says that we are not allowed to check signitures on cc any more. only if the card says check id (which is a joke)

The law also allows ZIP Codes to be requested when a credit card is used as a deposit or for a cash advance, the court said.". Wish I'd read this before I posted...

JCP's new thing is they ask for your phone # at checkout, to see if you have rewards points. for every $100 in points in a month, you get a $10 off coupon. Really haven't had anyone even blink when asking for phone #. just sayin.
I agree. When I first moved to the US, I didn't like being asked for my zipcode in stores because I thought they were much more unique - British post codes apply to only a few houses per street, whereas five digit zip codes apply to an entire city in the US.
My "password" at Safeway, Walgreens etc, if I forget my membership card, is my phone number and none of those stores have ever phoned me.
Bath & Body Works always ask for my email address, which I will not give them. Half the time, the assistant just shrugs and moves on, the other half say, "But we send coupons, you'd be missing out!" and I still say "No, thank you". They always have coupons, I don't need my email box filling up with their junk to get their deals.

As for the class action suit, well, there will be far too many people to participate, so the lawyers will end up with the bulk of the money!
OMGoodness - what a good idea !

If I have a receipt for my purchase, the tags are still on the product and it hasn't been used then I say NO, I won't provide you with that info. Sales clerks are always surprised when I say no and they say it's store policy to which I always respond "but I don't work for the store" and I point to their refund policy which I am in compliance with
They ask you to sign the return slip to prevent theft in the store. They want to make sure the customer is the one who returned the item, and it's not a scam by cheating clerks. It's fraud prevention.

Exactly. It would be easy to steal a credit card and buy lots and lots of gas.

I just do not give it... and if I HAD to I would make one up.

Interesting.
I find it very intrusive when asked. I am usually not prepared with a good reply.
