BE gals: am I applying this wrong? I always look powdery and like a corpse...

I've tried changing the shade, that didn't work. Am I just not buffing it in enough? I like a dewy, moist look on my face...and in winter, I tend twd drier skin...so powders scare me. The deluxe sized foundaiton is such a great value though, so I'm wondering if I'm doing somehting wrong??! Please advise.
