Love this thread as it is very important to me. Here is a site to see all the animal based ingredients. http://www.vegfamily.com/lists/animal-ingredients.htm

There are so many it's practically impossible to keep up with but there are some very common ones such as carmine which is crushed beetle used in many lipsticks and blushes for the red coloring. I was surprised to learn that as natural as Josie Maran products claim to be they use carmine in her cheek tints and lipsticks.

Carmine is also used in Dannon yogurt as food coloring. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/24/dannon-carmine_n_3645757.html

Glad I don't like yogurt. Everything is about doing your research for items you put in and on your body.

I never trust those lists. There are tricks of the trade - believe me. I used to work for a company that had it's own make-up and skin care line. They proudly advertised that we didn't test on animals ... And ""we"" didn't. But the companies in France and Spain from which we purchased our private label line sure did. Nice little loophole. And I'm sure they aren't the only ones exploiting it.

The most ridiculous part of Dannon using carmine is is that they use it in their strawberry flavor, not their other flavors. I guess using "real" strawberry flavor wouldn't work :-(

unfortunately, many people do not consider fish (It cosmetics' source for their hydrolyzed collagen) and insects (source of carmine) as "animals" and therefore not in the same category as, say, a cuddly cat or a smart dolphin. It is kind of the way of the world. Pandas are a great example. There is so much interest in trying to keep pandas from going extinct because they are "cute" but meanwhile, hundreds, if not thousands of other animals have since gone extinct over the years but haven't got the attention pandas got, scientists believe part of the reason for this is probably because they aren't as cute and "loveable". Sad but true.

I will never understand how we as humans are able to torture innocent animals for the almighty dollar. I try very hard to do my research (and I'm not saying I'm perfect), but if I am aware, I do not buy anything that I know an animal suffered for. I do not eat meat, but cannot call myself vegan. Again, I try to be as aware as I can. I refused to watch any of the Olympics because of the Sochi stray dogs. It is what it is. Good luck and the more people care and the less we buy of animal products/furs/etc., less animals will die. Supply and demand.

I agree and your point about trying to be more aware and avoid, as best as you can, to purchase products were animals suffered or were killed in order sell/make the product or support anything where animals suffered is the best we can do. I wish all people felt this way but unfortunately, we humans seem to think that our needs, wants and desires take precedent over everything else on this earth and that animals (and the environment for that matter) do not matter. It really is sad but one baby step at a time. Eventually I believe animal testing will be banned everywhere. We can hope!

WEN sells boar bristle brushes, made from the stiff bristles on a boars neck and back., I don't think they go around hog tying boars, cut the hair off and then release them back to the wild. Just because razorbacks are dangerous animals doesn't mean they should be killed for a brush.

I have seen many lists of companies that are cruelty free and depending on what site publishes the, they all seem different. Wen is listed as cruelty free on one of the sites, yet anything made from an animal part can't be cruelty free. Bristles are not a byproduct of a main food source like cattle are. I tend to put more credence in PETA's list. They actually go out and do the investigations of factory farms and such.
