Re: Tipping at the Deli Counter?

I was at a local butcher shop and there was a tip jar on the counter.  I nearly flipped and just shook my head.  Do any of you get a tip for meals prepared or housework done at my home.  I don't.

I was surprised to see a tip jar on the deli counter of an out of town market I was visiting. Really? They want a tip at the deli counter now?

We're all used to seeing tip jars at beverage and food stands, but a tip jar at the deli counter? That's a new one!

At another out of town market I was at, they offered a service to help carry your bags to your car, and help load them if needed. The guys were wearing florescent vests for safety and right on the front of the vest, in big black letters, it said NO TIPPING. That's a great service to the elderly or someone with any kind of a disability! And it was nice to see that they'll do their job with no tip required!

@lmtWe live in a small town and at our local grocery store the carry-outs aren't allowed to take tips. I always have them carry out my groceries because they like to get outside for a while. That's because I know all of themWoman Very Happy

I'm bracing myself for the appearance of a tip jar at the checkout desk in the public library.

Just my opinion, I think this tipping issue has gotten out of control.  I have heard several times that people are just not going to tip anyone because everyone has there hand out.  Unfortunately those jobs that actually depend on tips as part of their wages will suffer.

I completely agree, tipping is out of hand! What next.....a tip for the person who bags my food? Or the cashier who totals my purchases?

On a side note, I was looking online at some local restaurants - getting some ideas for new places to go. I checked out one and on the bottom of the menu it said, A 3% service charge will be applied to each credit or debit transaction. Since it costs all establishments (not just restaurants, of course) to run a credit card transaction, they're starting to pass the cost on to the consumer. Maybe alot of establishments already factor this in to their prices, but when I see that in writing it just makes me not want to go there.

It would be so much smarter of them to offer a discount for cash instead of tacking on more fees.

Actually, some places do.

We vacation at the Jersey shore. One of the motels we stay at offers a 5% discount if you pay with cash. Of course not every place offers this option and some people may not want to travel with hundreds of dollars in cash on them.

Now I see that some motels are starting to charge 3% for using a credit card to pay off your balance when you check in. It seems that only a few motels are adding the fee, but I'm sure that more and more places will start implementing this.
