I'm sure your son is embarassed and will take more care in the future.  As unpleasant as the return trip was, I'd be grateful to him for driving, and with his own car.  A ten-hour trip each way is no small thing.

@ValuSkr Oh, Sweetie!  This wasn't 10 hours.  This was locally!Smiley Happy

@ECBG    @patbz  said in the original post that it was a two-day trip (10 hours total) and the check engine light came on when they were still 1/2 hour from home.

DH goes nuts if the oil light comes on and drives straight to the dealer to get it changed. Sounds like to have been empty enough for three quarts there is a leak or your son hasn’t had any maintenance done in a long time. I hope no damage was done driving it so long without oil...blown engine could have happened any minute!

I blew an engine when I was a kid, well, maybe 23.  You then learn how important oil is to your car.  I'm going; to make a sexist remark, your son should have known better if you didn't.

When I learned to drive in the 70s my father taught me how to change a tire and to make sure I had my oil changed every so many miles and to check level of oil every so often.  I have lymphedema in one of my arms so I can't change a tire but do have AAA.

These days when I get my oil changed they put a little sticker on the upper part of my windshield telling me to get it changed when the odometer hits so many miles/after so many months.  I check my oil levels every few months but whenever I am going on a trip and driving - I have my tires and oil checked before leaving.

I check  oil every couple of weeks.  Oil change when due.

always a good idea to have your trusted mechanic do a checkup if you are driving your car for a road trip. if you get regular service, some will do them as a courtesy. tires, belts/hoses, battery, all fluids. it is basic CAR101 for any owner or driver.
