I'm so glad that you all made it to your destination safe and sound.  It could have gone so much worse had your engine/transmission siezed up, or whatever they do when the oil is gone.  I'm not sure the age of your son but this is definitely a case of live and learn and sounds like maybe a rookie mistake.  Whenever I have a long drive ahead, I always make sure to have an oil change done where they check all the levels and details.

I'm sure your son is embarassed and will take more care in the future.  As unpleasant as the return trip was, I'd be grateful to him for driving, and with his own car.  A ten-hour trip each way is no small thing.

@patbz Early in our marriage DH had picked up our 7 mo old baby in the snow.  He ALWAYS had a habit of not gassing the car until the gas pump showed.  Wouldn't you know, in 6 inches of snow he ran out of gas and had to walk to the exit which had one of his computer customers. The bookkeeper kept our son while DH got gas.

I took our son to meet her when he was a senior.

@patbz. That was a rough trip.  In our part of the country, there are places where service stations are few and far between.

That is the truth.  Last August we were driving from Santa Fe to Pagosa Springs to see friends.   We were going to stop at a place in Espanola for breakfast but made a wrong turn.  Over two hours later we came across a + in the roads with a gas station.

I am still chuckling about auto correct's substitute for "very religious."

Sounds like he has a "beater car". Most cars, (that I've had), takes 5 quarts of oil. He doesn't need an oil change at this point, only more oil. I wouldn't ride in that car again!

@patbz NO OIL AT ALL?  You must have a huge leak.   An oil change is not going to fix that.

Can you fill in a missing part of your story. You had no oil...but you put in 3 quarts. Where did you manage to buy some in that small town on a Sunday?

The way you describe that town sounds like you could have wound up in a scene from a bad movie! Happy for you & your & son and the kids that you made it back safe and sound.

Show Low is a decent sized town of around 10,000 in Arizona. They have Walmart's, grocery stores, Target, etc. just like any other city in Arizona. They don't roll up the sidewalks on Sundays. It's business as usual.

@patbz ...Glad you had a good outcome!

Years ago as a young girl, the same thing happened to me....I was alone, driving on the turnpike, headed home for Christmas, about a 3 hour drive.  The oil light came on and the after a while I heard a noise.... I stopped at one of the plaza's on the turnpike and I had no oil...the 'lifters' were making the noise.

It was my first car, no one ever told me a car needed oil....ha, ha......learned my lesson and was so thankful that no one took advantage of me.

We got oil changed and tires rotated; so far so good (hopefully we dodged a bullet).  The car is a Prius V (usually pretty indestructable-- that's why many of the world's taxis are Prius).
