My family moved from Seattle to Los Angeles when I was in the 3rd grade and we lived there until my senior year in high school. I have so many great memories of Disneyland (My uncle was an engineer and involved in building the park so we went just after it opened and every year after), spending time at the beach with my friends, shopping in L.A., my aunt and uncle's house on the Newport peninsula, and on and on. My mother grew up in Long Beach and lived there until she met my father during WWII.
I attended my last year of high school and college in Tempe, Arizona, and moved back to California as soon as I graduated from college. I lived in Costa Mesa, Huntingtom Beach, Newport Beach, and Laguna for 15 years before moving back to Tempe to be closer to my family. I miss California every day - my friends, the climate, the ocean, all the interesting things to do, and, most of all, the liberal attitudes and respect for diversity. I am so fortunate to have had the opportunity to grow up there and wish I could afford to go back and retire there.
I hurts my heart to think of all the beauty that has been destroyed by the recent fires and the tragedy of those that have lost their loved ones and their homes.

This is one of the places I miss.

Regarding your mention of California being so big compared to New England...a story from many years ago. I'm a native San Diegan and was married here, in San Diego, over 40 years ago. My New England cousin's wedding gift was a lovely cut glass bowl from a Macy's in his hometown. Well, it arrived shattered, so I called that store. The customer service person told me to just simply return it to my nearest Macy's. Clearly, she had no perception that my nearest Macy's at that time was in San Francisco, around 450 miles away! (Would have been a good reason for a road trip, though!). Now, changing subject....though still in San Diego and loving it, we do also love the Central Coast and spend time every year in Pacific Grove....the golf, walking paths, Monterey Bay

@Moonchilde@Born and raised here, second generation. My maternal grandparents lived here from about 1915. Both my mother and I, and my sister, born and raised in SoCal. Nieces and their families living in NorCal and the Central Coast, and me too now on the Central Coast. I lived almost my entire life all over SoCal from the Valley to Long Beach to all over the OC, visited San Diego and Santa Barbara multiple times. Have only visited briefly north of here - in the fire areas, once. So...familiar with the state ;-
I love the weather and the scenery on the Central Coast (and the wine), and the slower pace. I don’t miss SoCal traffic, prices, heat and crowds, but very much miss its cultural diversity, its museums, its international cuisine, and its shopping.
Hi, thanks for the tread. I was born and raised in San Francisco 81 years ago. Raised by my Grandmother from Italy and lived in North Beach. My Father was a crab fisherman. I graduated from Galileo HS in 1954. I also lived inner and outer Mission through the years. Moved to Linda Mar for 15 years and worked at The MOONRAKER restaurant for a few years, a beautiful place over looking the ocean. Ok now live in Sonoma County for forty two years.

Great Grandpa was born and raised in Corning Ca. Not far from where I live now. He was the towns first and only blacksmith. There is even a creek named after him that you cross over whenever driving on I-5. He passed when I was 4 but I do remember him. DH and I have been to his resting place. We leave a horseshoe when we visit.
All of my family lived in California (in one place or another) ever since I can remember. My dad was born in Long Beach and eventually his mom and dad and four brothers moved to El Monte. My mom was born in a mining camp in Utah and then lived in NY before moving to SFO and then SO Cal where she met my dad as young teens. The lived across the street from each other.
My DD is the only one in our family that has recently moved far away to Dover, DE.
I am California born and raised. Born and lived in So. Cal and lived there until I was about 21. Then moved to San Luis Obispo and lived there for about 5 years. Very pretty area, miss the Thursday farmers market. DH was born in Fresno and as a little boy moved to Michigan but only lived there for about a year. He came back and lived in Vacaville until he joined the army. After that he moved to So. Cal. where we eventually met.
After San Luis DH and I moved to No. Cal. Way north to start a family. And here we stay.
It doesn't normally snow a LOT right where I live, close by yes, but not in town. But we did have this year before last. This is a corner of my backyard...
This is is one tree in the front yard...
And the same back corner with no snow...

I was born in San Francisco. I am a 5th generation San Franciscan.
Noel, looks like our families may have crossed paths in the past.
I have been living in Santa Barbara since the 1960's. Came for school and never left. I love and adore it here, but San Francisco will always be home.
This will be a nice thread, just have to train myself to check in.

Like several posters, I am a CA native. I am fourth generation,
all Northern CA. I was born in Berkeley, my dad in Oakland,
his father in Sacramento, and my great-grandfather also in Sacramento. My son and now his son (sixth gen) in SF.
My great grandmother lived almost to 100, and was born in Shasta County (Cottonwood) in 1867. Her husband was my
great-grandfather born in Sacramento.
I enjoy so many other places while traveling, but CA is definitely home.

I spent a lot of time at Crystal Cove in Laguna Beach, @missy1.
