I wouldn’t lie about it. Falling is a very real concern, especially for seniors, and footwear that’s too big can increase that risk. It’s better to be honest and explain they are too large and you are worried about tripping.

 

Her comment about “picking up your feet” was dismissive, safety isn’t something to brush off. You can thank her for the thoughtfulness of the gift while making it clear that the fit isn’t right for you.
