The only thing that I have to add is if you choose a gift card to a restaurant make sure it is to somewhere that they would likely go to eat.  

I once received a gift card to a very expensive restaurant where even after using the gift card it would have still been a very costly meal.  We ended up using one of these services where they bought the card back and we lost a little bit of money.  It was still better than just letting the card sit in a drawer.  

While it might seem like a lovely idea to give them a card to a 5 star restaurant not everyone wants to go to someplace like that for a meal or has the budget for it.  

Unless the recipient has expensive tastes it's better to stick with mid-range restaurants or even gift cards for take-out.
