Early 70's, my husband was in service with limited leave time, so our plan was to be married by a Judge at the Courthouse.

My grandmother wanted to see us married in our local church, as did our mothers, so the end result was a family only, no frills, less than 30 minute ceremony at the church, and a very simple reception at my grandparents house.   Every expense incurred may have totaled $175.

First wedding. MIL showed up wearing an off-white wedding dress,

My gown and veil $200. I'm short and weighed almost nothing back then. Next to her I looked like I was making my first Communion.

Second wedding just DH and I and our children (all grown) and their partners if they had them, and our close friend who also took the pictures.

My son was my "maid of honor" and DH's oldest son was best man.  Married at the restaurant in a private room and best time of our life. No band, just us, vows, dinner, cake. Freezing weather to boot. I wore a long straight gold dress kind of shimmery.

@chrystaltree mentioned the bridesmaids getting their dresses from the Sears catalog. That brought back memories. When I first started working, JC Penneys had a bridal outlet store in Milwaukee. I remember some of my co-workers going there to get their bridal attire. I guess it was a madhouse when it opened on Saturday mornings. You could get incredible deals if you hit on the right size and style.

We had sandwiches and salads at VFW hall. I picked up my pink cake and flowers. My invitations were fill-in-the-blank style I bought at the market. We had live music and dancing. That was 45 years ago come April. We were married in a small church with my one sister as bridesmaid.

Re: Regarding Your Wedding

[ Edited ]

New Year's Eve afternoon 1981 at my husband's sisters home with a small amount of family on both sides.  I bought my cocktail dress at Dillard's too for about a $100.00.

I wore it again on our honeymoon cruise.  That night we went to a big company New Year's Eve party where we were made to my embarrassment, the center of attention.  Took the Presidential Suite at the Hotel that night where President Ford had slept then left the next day for the cruise.

I wanted the honeymoon and the new home we came back to not a photo album of nice photos.  Divorced 18 years almost to the day later.  Now that was a great day!

Re: Regarding Your Wedding

[ Edited ]

Very Casual outdoor wedding in August of 1980. Had family style reception, we had about 78 people there. No band or DJ-just a champagne Fountain and family style food, with a Wedding Cake. Wedding was at 3pm, and everyone was gone by probably 7pm or so....

No honeymoon, as we had just come back two months prior from Las Vegas. So couldn't afford another trip.....My dress was purchased at a local very nice Department Store, it was tea length and so perfect for the casual occasion. We each only had one attendant...My sister, and his brother!

It was perfect for us. We will be married 45 years this August!! We have two daughters, and two granddaughters and one Grandson!

Wanted to add that my older sister got married exactly two weeks after I did, and she also had an outdoor wedding, but she had the traditional reception at a hall and went on a honeymoon to Mexico. Her dress was also a traditional bridal gown, she also only had one attendant as well.

My mom and Dad were like are you two trying to drive us crazy?? lol!!!!!! Plus my sister and her fiance lived in Boston, and we lived in Wisconsin, so My mom had a lot of planning to do with my sister being so far away, but getting married in Wisconsin.....

I am so glad I kept mine simple-so much easier!

I got married in a Catholic Church with my uncle, the priest, officiating.  My beautiful dress I bought for $45.00, my veil my sister made for me, we had a nice reception, about 100 people, a nice day to remember, my brother gave me away at the wedding, he got killed 4 months later in a plane crash, good I have nice pictures of him at the wedding.  We will be happily married 61 years this August. We have two girls and two granddaughters.

I have no idea what mine cost. We were really young and only knew  each other 8 months. I had just come into the military and he was on his way out. We got married at his parents house and had his family there and the best part of the wedding is that my Mom, brother and Grandma showed up.  This took place in OKC and I was from Pa. We will be celebrating our 43 anniversary this Sept. and his parents paid for it all. I guess they paid the preacher and we had a small cake. Later he came back into them military and I had already gotten out. Did the hole 20 year thing.

My original story is on page 4..@cakers about her MIL reminded me..

My MIL hated me from day 1..When we got engaged she asked her son"why are you marrying a fat Italian girl?" "You could do much better".

She looked like a fool at our wedding..She made her dress..everyone else has a gown of some kind..The dress was avacado green with copper colored sequins and a copper sequined pill box hat.. Our best man was a childhood friend who always said what he felt..He told MIL she looked like the organ grinder and where was her monkey???!!

His sister pulled me away I was laughing so hard!

MIL and I rarely spoke FIL was a doll always.

She must still be spinning in her grave 54 yrs.later
