A lot is genetics.  Sam Elliott has all his hair, baldness is usually inherited, think here of Prince William.

His attitude is pretty attractive, too.  That's a big part of it.

Helen Mirren also looks good and has the same kind of confidence/attitude.

Oh, please...go to your 20th (or later) high school reunion and you'll see that the women look much better than the men. We take care of ourselves, and make the effort to look good, whereas the men don't even think about that.

I think it's because women look at men differently and see qualities that men would never see in a woman.  Because men and women are different.
