@Lucky Charm   I was named after my Dad's mother , my Grandma that I never met since she passed away when my Dad was only 18 and in the army. He didn't make it home for her funeral.

He always had a soft spot for his Mom and gave me the name Shanus (a derivative of her Hebrew name).

I don't get your confusion. Many people have given names and nick names. I guess you can now color yourself "explained". I answer to both names.

After many years here, I have no interest in changing my nic. Have a nice day.

Shanus, if interested, should have been Shana in proper Hebrew. So, the story goes that when I was born, my old aunt looked at me in the hospital, and said, "Oy, is she "Shane"...meaning beautiful. I have no idea how it got on my birth certificate as Shanus. Mispelled, parents wanted to be different, who knows, but I've had to spell it my entire life + spell my German last name....PIA.

So, Shane is acceptable and easier.

@Shanus I always thought you said your father called you Shanus (I think you said it meant beautiful) as a nickname.  Didn't realize it was on your birth certificate as your given name.

@Lucky Charm   I'm thinking when my Dad called me Shanus & considered it a nickname, it was because no one else, but him, called me that...I was Shane to others. He maybe felt it was "our" special name.

Oh color me confused.  I thought people just started calling you Shane--thus your OP.

'...in the last several years, I've noticed some friends and family have shortened my name to "Shane".  The GDs even refer to me as Mom Mom Shane, now.  DH has caught the bug, too.'

Anyway, maybe you want to see if you can use the nic Shane here.  @Shanus

Nope, even more confused!

People shorten my name all the time, like @Shanus example and I HATE it.  Even if it is meant as a term of endearment I still loathe it.  I wish people would use my actual name.  I'll correct people once but after that I know that you don't respect me enough to use my name. It's an easy one just don't want to share it here.

@Lucky Charm   Does it really matter? I answer to both names and then just chose Shanus here as my nic.

I was the baby in the family so my Dad always called me Babe. My whole life that was what he called me. Nobody else did except him. I sure miss that now and would love somebody to call me that.

The OP created the thread with one story, and then changed it. You most likely will not receive a clarification.

She does that quite often.
