To be fair about this topic, lets remember that many folks put others' lives at risk every day by talking on their phone while driving, driving under the influence of pain pills and\or marijuana, or just driving like a bat out of hell. There is no excuse for any of it. People are more likely to change their behavior when others (like the OP) are nice to them rather than others who condemn and chastise them. Jail is probably effective, too.

No sympathy from me! My 22 y/o sister was killed by a 40ish y/o drunk driver. Coming home from college, 6 weeks before she was to graduate with honors. SERIOUSLY, are you kidding me? He is not a kid, and his THIRD DUI? He's going to rehab for a lighter sentence, no other reason and his tears are for himself, otherwise he would have gotten help after the first and certainly his second. He's an alcoholic so why not AA after the second time for sure? Instead of friends not judging (heaven forbid) or feeling sorry for him, maybe his friends should show him tough love and insist he get help and they'll be there encouraging and praying for him, or else. I'm sorry, but your sympathy for him is misplaced. Third DUI and didn't learn from the first two AND didn't get help. Tears and feeling sorry for himself will be too late after he has killed or crippled someone.
Sorry for the rant Sherrikay, I'm sure you mean well but you hit a nerve.

Drunk driving is NOT a mistake. It is a choice. You drink too much and you CHOOSE to get into your car drunk. Call a friend, Uber. It's a matter of choice THREE times. I guess that's THREE mistakes. Actually it's only THREE times he got caught. He couldn't be so unlucky that he only drove drunk THREE times in his life and got caught all THREE times. I hope he gets the help he needs.

Drunks behind the wheel forever hurt so many people in many families, their own and the families of  the individual(s) they hurt or kill in the other car.  Three DUI's, no sympathy.... time to permanently revoke his license.  He can take an Uber, for the rest of his life.  He's the luckiest one, he still has a life.

@Luvsmyfam I'm sorry you might feel badly about making this post. No one is attacking you. You sound like a very nice person. It is, of course, a very serious topic.....so I think it is very good that you posted it and have stimulated discussion and input about this topic. The sad truth is that many people have been killed or hurt (via the loss of family or friends, etc) because of drunk driving so the topic will evoke strong reactions from people. I appreciate you bringing the topic up. I hope rehab helps your colleague.

Unless your friend is wanting to go to rehab because he honestly wants to stop his addiction then it won't work and he hasn't hit rock bottom. And with this his third DUI I'd be amazed if he doesn't deservingly get some jail time. His failure to address his problem impacts others. His failure to continue to drive and not get a ride can be deadly.

In this day and age, with Uber and Lyft, there is no justifiable excuse for a third DUI. And as a friend you would not be out of place telling him that.

What he did isn't your fault but feeling sorry for him doesn't help. Share the post about victims with him..he has to stop driving drunk or he'll end up wishing he did. Be well @Luvsmyfam.
