@Winifred

I'm glad to see there are still a percentage of people that observe Memorial Day as it was originally intended.

I remember years ago when I was young (back when it was still "Decoration Day") everyone went to the cemeteries to clean and decorate the graves of their loved ones.  Then the day seemed to morph into a holiday mostly for picnics, baseball and hot dogs.

I hope we never get to the point that we are so self-absorbed that we forget the reasons for this (and similar) holiday(s).🇺🇸

After the stifling heat earlier in the week and then the cold snap I thought for sure I lost chippy the chipmunk.... and then I was blessed to see him/her yesterday afternoon.  I was so happy I was beside myself.

My sister and I made our first trip to youngest great niece's house yesterday.  She, her daughter and her partner moved out to the boonies after Thanksgiving.  My sister bought great niece her second American Girl doll (she also bought the first) for great niece's upcoming 10th birthday in September.  It was shipped to my house since I'm retired and my sister decided she wanted great niece to have it early (probably since the little one soldiered through the wave of covid that ran through the family).

I thought driving to eldest niece's house was bad.  It's a breeze compared to younger great niece's house.  Again I drove on a cr@ppy weather day - 40's, windy and rainy.  I took a highway, I-75 and then another highway to get to some funky long and winding narrow road that was largely unpaved.  My God I thought my fillings in my teeth were gonna fall out and I started to worry about my tires and suspension.  I'll tell you one thing, well maybe 2 things.  I will never make the drive in the dark or in the snow.

Even though my niece had covid, she had already gotten her first Pfizer dose and had until May 24th to get her second dose in order for it to be okay.  She didn't get the second dose, her partner had declared that he is never getting the vaccine so it was a porch drop off.  She asked my sister if we would come inside and see the house.  When sister related that to me I said, nope.  I think I surprised my sister with the response because I said it without any hesitation, lol.

My eldest niece, her husband and her in laws (who commonly attend every special event) were vaccinated.  I haven't gone to visit with them yet.  I think the vaccination status of other niece and her partner are going to prove to be problematic regarding family get togethers.

Re: May 2021 Bird's Nest

[ Edited ]

Rani, cold and windy all last night and into most of the day today.  We had 7 huge ( 4 foot or more) Rhododendrons delivered on Friday and my husband decided to try and plant them on Saturday in the rain.  Where we wanted them planted is mostly bad soil and rock so he had to remove the bad soil and replace with the good soil.  He told me that he was going to do a little at a time and as usual did not do a little at a time.  He did get 4 planted and they do look nice.  Besides being wet he was in not so good shape when he came indoors.   He took a nice hot shower and I made us dinner.  I hope he does not decide to plant the rest today because the weather is to be another cold. windy and rainy day.  We reached 44 and I had the heat on.  We set a record today for the temperature being so low. More of the same on Sunday and Monday.  We sure do need the rain so I am not complaining.

@geezerette

I remember those days when we all went to the cemetery and cleaned up and then planted flowers.  We live way out of State from where our parents are buried so we no longer do that anymore. I miss those days.

@Winifred

How nice that you and family participated in the reading of the names of those buried at the cemetery.  I hope that you are feeling well and taking care of yourself!

@Bird mama

So glad to hear that Chippy is back!!!  Can't wait to hear if there are more of them.  I would have said the same thing as you did and not gone into the house either.  Our neighbor had planned a large outdoor party and due to the rain had it indoors. I am not ready for that just yet.

Everyone take care and enjoy the rest of the extended weekend.

Edited to mention that on Friday I went to our local shoe store that discounts all great named shoes.  I belong to a club where as after purchasing 12 pairs of shoes there they average them all out and you get that amount off of your next pair of shoes.  I had $96 coming to me so I picked up a pair of Merrill slip on shoes that I love and got them for free with some money still left in my account.  Needless to say I am a happy camper!

Yesterday was 'catch up' day for me.  Had lots of grass to cut, especially in the backyard and checked the first floor gutters again (was windy on Friday).  I washed down the lawn furniture and convert-a-bench, swept up the garage addition and tidied up the patio concrete.  I've been pooling water on the dip in the patio for the ducks and algae was growing Woman Surprised  My sister is coming over for the holiday and I wanted things to look like I made an effort.

Hi Birding Friends,  Sorry to not be posting for so long, but have been trying to get things in order for my sister and her DH's visit here for a couple of weeks to help declutter this house and haul some things to auction house etc.  Plus dealing with my feline family and their needs plus the birds and shopping etc.   I am worn out by mid afternoon and still have stuff to do.

It's a sad day for my family as my one brother died a year ago today and there are so many memories and reminders.   My sister, other brother and my brother in law just left to go to the cemetery a bit ago.   I can't bring myself to do it, yet.    Too raw even after a year.   I know how it was for him the last months etc, and its hard to deal with.

I miss posting and y'all but will try to catch up with posts and get here a few times while my sister is here.   I usually drive over to IL each evening to spend time with them at supper and after.   It's about 25 minutes each way and I wear out so fast anymore.   Hadn't been on my computer since last Friday, I think.  Might be a record.   😉

Be safe and be well, my Friends.
