A number of years ago I bought my brother a $1000 Best Buy gift card ( on behalf of my parents).  Not much later he went into Best Buy to use it and there was about $15 on it.  Funny thing is that he was in his California Highway Patrol uniform.  You can bet management traced this back to a dishonest employee and made my brother whole.  I now always check my balance on any cards I give or receive and save purchase receipt.
