@lucymo wrote:The mass produced ones were nothing compared to the original ones. I saw the adoptions at a little store in Shreveport, LA and it was so neat. They started out with hand soft sculpted cloth faces and clothes and were extremely expensive. I believe they were born in the cabbage patch in GA, is that right? We didn't get one of those but did one with the vinyl faces and I still think they were cute and wish I'd kept mine.
@lucymo...back in 1979 I purchased an original doll at the Atlanta airport, his bottom was signed by the designer...dolls name was Thad Arthur, he was adorable. I went on to collect about 3 of the originals that were hand signed either on their bottom or on their clothing, which added to their value
I sold Thad Arthur on ebay for about 700.00!! I was shocked someone would pay that much.

My daughters hated these dolls, so I never had to deal with the craze first hand.

Guess where I was yesterday?
Yep at the Cabbage Patch! ![]()
They still make the soft sculptured ones. They are very expensive $200-$300 but I did lust after a one of a kind baby.
I settled for one of the exclusive kids and an exclusive baby which are soft sculptured but do have the plastic face.
I confess living this close I do own a few now. I never outgrew my dolls.
If you are ever in Cleveland, GA, go to the Babyland Hospital. It's a big plantation a la Gone with the Wind and they have every CPK doll you can imagine from the toys you can find in store to the exclusives they have only there to the one of a kind originals.
And you can see a baby born from Mother Cabbage. I am not kidding. Youtube it. The staff is dressed in nurse outfits and scrubs and they page everyone when Mother Cabbage goes into labor.
I was almost stampeded by the flock of kids who ran to go see a baby born. They had to yell PUSH and the boys were invited to wait in the waiting room in case they got queasy. I am not kidding.
The baby waves at you when he/she comes out of the tree. I am still not kidding. Then you can watch the nurse weigh and clean and wrap the baby up in the adjacent nursery.
I was shaking in a corner with laughter the whole time. It's really a hoot. Definitely an experience if you are ever close enough to stop by.

@QVCkitty1 That is just awful, who could even live with themselves knowing they did that to a child, just awful!

I do remember those dolls. Still have 2 in my house (for the grandkids.)
i do remember the fights people were having over those dolls.
Only reason I got a doll way back when. I was working retail and when a shippment came in the employees were given a chance to pick up the "kids" before being sold to public.

My mother got 2 of them very early in the season. In the meantime I bought one. We really did not need the other 2 and people were paying lots of money for these dolls.
My mother listed them for sale. A fireman came to her house on Christmas Eve with 2 little girls. She said she just could not charge them extra for the dolls and gave the dolls to the little girls.
I miss my mom..........

The first year they came out, it was impossible to get one. So a neighbor and I made one for our daughters. Back then soft sculpture was popular so we went with that concept. We use yarn for the hair to match the color of theirs, even made toes and fingers. My friend painted the faces and I made the clothes. 30 years later it's still her most precious possession.

I was working in a toy store when they came out. I remember on Black Friday they were lined around the store. When we opened the doors it was insane! A whole rack fell over and people were screaming. We were all so scared. They were all gone in about 20 minuets. While people were shopping they had to watch the carts because one lady stole one out of a mans cart. I will never forget that day as long as I live. So to answer the question, yes I do remember. 😂😂😂😂😂
