My wonderfully talented Mother made two of them, from scratch, soft faces and the clothing too. I was all grown up with a four year old and a baby and she gave them to me on the pretext that my boys would love them but they were really for me. I still have them and they look like the real deal....

They still make the soft sculptured ones. They are very expensive $200-$300 but I did lust after a one of a kind baby.

I settled for one of the exclusive kids and an exclusive baby which are soft sculptured but do have the plastic face.

I confess living this close I do own a few now. I never outgrew my dolls.

If you are ever in Cleveland, GA, go to the Babyland Hospital. It's a big plantation a la Gone with the Wind and they have every CPK doll you can imagine from the toys you can find in store to the exclusives they have only there to the one of a kind originals.

And you can see a baby born from Mother Cabbage. I am not kidding. Youtube it. The staff is dressed in nurse outfits and scrubs and they page everyone when Mother Cabbage goes into labor.

I was almost stampeded by the flock of kids who ran to go see a baby born. They had to yell PUSH and the boys were invited to wait in the waiting room in case they got queasy. I am not kidding.

The baby waves at you when he/she comes out of the tree. I am still not kidding. Then you can watch the nurse weigh and clean and wrap the baby up in the adjacent nursery.

I was shaking in a corner with laughter the whole time. It's really a hoot. Definitely an experience if you are ever close enough to stop by.

@Laura14 DH and I took a side trip to that 'adoptation center' years ago...it was fun, women dressed as nurses, babies being born.... I remember buying a doll, Prascillia Patience was her name, she was dressed in a pink and white knit one piece outfit with a hood, also signed. This has brought back fun memories. My mom collected antique dolls when she was alive. I own many of her dolls, when we were dividing up the dolls, my pick was the baby dolls.

Yep, I remember them. How could I forget after spending many many hours waiting in l-o-n-g lines to make my daughter's Christmas merry! Truth be told, I wanted those dollies more than my daughter did-ha! I also stood in lines for the Wrestlers, Teddy Ruxpin, Care Bears, GI Joe, Star Wars, Pound Puppies, and the list goes on and on. Oh, how I wish I could make the last 40 years disappear and once again be the young mom waiting in those lines. Happy times.

@Mom2Dogs How lucky! I love dolls. It sounds like your mother and I would have gotten along famously. The antique dolls are just beautiful.

I am being haunted by one of the one of a kinds I saw there on Sunday. I'm half tempted to go get him but I just can't justify that much money on a doll even if it is an original work of art.

Maybe someday.
